Spending more $$, Nokia Lumia

One of my biggest kvetches is the crappy cell phone pics and the typical freebie phones and no GPS w/o having to pay for a service. I have a decent Casio point and shoot @12.1 and a good sized card with great standby battery and will take 250 plus pics at full rez.

Well Nokia claims to have a 41 MP camera in the new model. Anyone have it yet?

Get an iPhone... it will make your iLife so much better... join us... you will be so much more iHappier

I really like the windows phones... and I always loved Nokia reliability... recently sold my soul to android/Samsung and it is pretty ding/dang good, no complaints.

But when the contract on the sammy/galaxy is up as much as I like it and as well as it works I will be looking at the Nokia (compared to a Galaxy4)

The "I" thingy I own is a Ipod and it's the last......shudder.....

A GPS, high rez camera with phone is what I have been waiting for. My crappy Samsung is EOL and I'm thinking that the 1020 may be the one, as long as it isn't in red.

Very happy with our Lumias

My daughter and I both have 920s and have been very happy with them over the past year. There are 3 other Nokias in our extended family 800, 710, 520 and everyone is happy.

Lots of 1020 reviews around. Check dpreview dot com for obsessive detail. I have been happy with Nokia's phone cameras going back to my N95. Noika's current camera app has the best controls available on a smart phone.

I am thinking about the 1020, but might hold out for the next one.

In the comparisons I've seen, the 1020's camera isn't much better than the 920's.

How long does the battery last as a dash cam? Can the memory be upgraded like GoPros or Contours? Does it have a built in GPS or do you have to do an online app?

Size doesn't matter....

41 Megapixel doesn't necessarily mean better camera. But I do not have any experience with the Nokia line. What are the other specs of the camera? (lowest f-stop, shutter speed range, image stabilization...etc ?)

I just got an iPhone 5S, but haven't taken pics with it yet -- but they say the f 2.2 on the camera is better for low-light conditions. And - if I'm going to take quality pictures, I have my Nikon point and shoot as well as my Nikon DSLR.

And cellphone with a camera will have its compromises -- you can't have your cake and eat it too!

I recently posted about the diminished picture quality of my Lumia 920 (and GPS issues) after performing a SW update. I was alerted to a new WP update over the weekend and did the install today. GPS works again, quickly locates satellite - have not tested the phone.

My close friend works for Nokia and has been sporting the latest, I believe the 1020. The picture quality from his phone is outstanding.

Nokia makes really nice hardware - easily as good/better than Apple IMO.

I've had the Nokia Lumia 920 for almost a year and I love it!

Steve Carlton 10-14-2013 08:27 PM

Same here. I expected a better camera than the 920 has with its Carl Zeiss lens. The pics are hit and miss, and the images fall apart when zoomed in on. 41MP is a ton and you wind up with large files to contend with on your computer. With digital cameras in general, large MP is usually a bunch of hype. It's only useful if you can crop a small portion of the image and still have a good, printable image. And MP has nothing to do with image quality outside of resolution, like white balance and dynamic range.

The iphone is great exept for one feature, it forces you to use itunes which i think is worst crap anyone ever came up with!

Just picked up a Lumia 1520. 6" hi-res screen vs 4.5" in the 920. Like a friggin' mini tablet. Love the idea of a huge screen...

Joe Bob 01-01-2014 11:34 PM

How much?

azasadny 01-02-2014 03:26 AM

I really like the camera on my Lumia 920 and almost every one of my pictures turn out far better than I expect them to. I'll be getting my wife and daughter each a new 1020 through Verizon in March when their AT&T contracts are up. The only issue I've had with my phone is the craptastic AT&T "service", it's the worst!

stealthn 01-02-2014 10:55 AM

Working with a client on an Enterprise Mobility project and they chose 1020's and 5S', the picture on the 1020 is much better than the iPhone, but can't hold a candle to my Canon 8 Megapixel SLR.

I guess it depends on what you want, for pictures use a camera, for posting your junk online get a 1020 :D
