Accident? No such a thing, it is a criminal offence. Kiss your ass goodbye.

Best way to see the country is to hire a driver and have him drive you around or take the excursion buses or taxi

Like anywhere, you buy insurance when you rent the car - which you can probably do at any resort. Since we were moving around, I rented it through an agency in Habana before I arrived in Cuba. At that time, you paid a 2nd operator in Europe, who in turn transferred the funds to the agency. Outside of the towns, there is so little traffic that it is hard to get into trouble - although an AWD is a good idea with some of the roads.
