computer help......I've been hit ! Ad spam

Yesterday I purchased a used RV fridge for my camper restoration. Thought I would download a owners manual and went to a site that looked like it was the manufacturers. Started the PDF download and quickly ads started popping up ! I stopped the download and deleted the file. I ran Microsoft Security Essentials and am currently running Kaspersky. It looks like the Kaspersky is finding some stuff but I know it is not the best software out there. Besides the ad redirection when I'm in a website some of the words in the text are highlighted in red. After the Kaspersky is done running should I download something like Ad Aware ? All I wanted is a friggen owners manual !!! Any help appreciated.

Recommend you download and run "Malwarebytes". I have had the best luck with this although I recently picked up "Sweetpacks" walware which was a real bitc# to remove as it required several steps besides running malwarebytes.

OK I finished running every bit of internet security I have on this computer. I also deleted all files that downloaded yesterday. After restarting the computer all seems to be back to normal......whew . I did a search for " free security software " and came up with tons of hits as expected. This site rates various free software, anyone know if this site is legit ? And is it safe to download from this site ? If it is are there any specific ones you recommend ? I think I dodged one here but would like to be better prepared than I currently am. Thanks

I use AVG free, between that and just a healthy dose of paranoia with regards to downloading stuff I have only had one problem in years.

Malwarebytes (free version) is not an anti-virus program. It is a program that is really good at killing things that get through your anti-virus programs. It is free and can be downloaded through C-Net.

Define safe.

You won't get a virus but they now pack in browser toolbars and other 'free, useful things" that they know we want but if they actually asked we'd tell them to F off.

I downloaded the trial version of malwarebytes it downloaded fine and setup an icon on my desktop. I ran a " quick scan " and it found 35 objects but I didn't see any option to remove or quarantine the objects found ? Does it remove them automatically ?

I got the malwarebytes figured out and cleaned up my system. Also downloaded free versions of Panda and AVG antivirus programs. So now I have the following.

Microsoft Essential Security
Kaspersky internet security
AVG antivirus
Panda antivirus
Malwarebytes

All this plus being more aware of what I download I hope cures this mess !

I am surprised your system allowed you to have multiple anti virus programs on it. Most virus programs see other virus programs as a virus.
My wife had Kaspersky, and Panda and both times her computer got fraged, I don't know if the AVG is so much better or she is just more careful now but she doesn't have any issues with it.

The paranoia is the real key. I think any of the anti-virus programs listed will work if you use paranoia as your primary firewall.

Just keep Malwarebytes loaded and updated just in case....

It's funny you bring this up as I couldn't get the Panda to work so I removed it. All remaining items are working.
