I know more Millionaires who drive pick ups than drive Benz's.

It is a cool deal if you get decent, clean ones. One issue is that some of these are soaked with unknown chemicals. Pallets were a great source of wood fiber for making wood pellets to burn but the EPA is being really hard on the pellet makers for using pallets that may be dirty.

Overall though if they are clean i think its awesome!

all great until u realize that most outdoor pallets from imports are soaked in toxic chemicals as a rot and bug treatment. nothing that i'd want to have in my house or in my garden.

And the pallets in those pictures look nothing like what I see on our loading dock.

Gheeze... I sound like a grumpy old man...

And most US only pallets have pine bore beetles...

My wife and i built one of those pallet tables for charity silent auction. Sold for $35, So after we installed wheels, painted it and labor, we only lost $10 or so.

But for a good cause.

A friend of mine used pallets to cover the floor of his wood shop. We got all of them in Miami and they were all made of various South American hard wood. After several passes through a jointer and a planner they were nailed down, sanded and treated with 3 coats of tongue oil. Came out amazing, nicer than the hardwood in my house.

If you're looking for clean Pine (or hard wood) pallets for a project, just visit your local produce wholesale market (every big city has one). You can either buy from one the produce warehouses, or just ask any food service delivery person where they go and sell the surplus pallets. At the company I worked for, the owner of the company would pocket between 2k and 3K a week just in selling the surplus to a "pallet yard", soft wood would pallets sell for about $1.50 each and the hard wood ones would sell for about $3.00 a piece. They in turn would sell to the cold storage companies, and food service companies for twice what they paid for. Oh before I forget, stay away from the blue pallets that read "Chep" those May be the best, but they belong to a government backed pallet exchange program, if you get caught with those, and you have no business having them, you may be liable, and may face prosecution (I think).

Pallet News and Analysis | More Than Pallets

The Pinellas Park Beacon – Tampa Bay Newspapers reports that on January 14, 2010 the owner of D & S Pallets and an employee were arrested for the selling of stolen equipment, namely CHEP pallets. (Two arrested for pallet theftPinellas Park Beacon - Tampa Bay Newspapers) In an “undercover” operation with the sheriffs department, D & S Pallet sold CHEP pallets after allegedly refusing to return the pallets to a CHEP asset management representative or a Service Center. What are the lessons learned for the rest of us? First, obviously don’t sell CHEP pallets as CHEP never sells or gives up ownership of their assets. (stringer pallet sale excluded) An observation, you never hear of a company being charged with receiving ”stolen” CHEP pallets. If a pallet company sells CHEP pallets to a company, they are more than likely a CHEP customer and the Big Blue pallets will more than likely end up back into the CHEP supply chain. These days, it seems that Brambles is not in the mood for even the smallest infractions from white wood recyclers…with the constant attacks from iGPS on the wood pallet market. Word of wisdom…do not sell CHEP pallets….either return them…or refuse to collect at your core source.

Guy I knew 20 years ago was a trucker, did the same route & same customers for years.
Had the whole run down to a fine art. This gave him plenty of time to deal pallets. Paid off his mortgage with the proceeds.
