Highschool coach accused of "bullying" because of lopsided score
When I saw the score, I thought the coach was a jerk too, but reading the rest of the story, I completely side with the coach of the winning team. Seems to me he did everything he could to prevent a huge blow out...starting running back scored 4 TD's on 6 touches?? Backup almost did the same? You can only do so much, and if the other team can't tackle a guy, what should he do? Lay down and wait to be touched down?!?

People are stupid. Take things too literally, bullying, really? ****, if that was my family that did the whining I'd leave the state, disown my parents and change my name.
I'd rather be dead...That's straight up embarrassing.

My grandson's Pop Warner team last year was undefeated and won CA State championship for their division. They had a mercy rule where once they were 24 points ahead they couldn't score any more unless the other side scored. Many plays the ball carrier just had to run out of bounds or fall down and let the pursuers catch him. Really stupid.

at least the other coach was adult about it and said the winning coach did nothing wrong. Sometimes you get your butt handed to you, sometimes you do the handing.

If you read the article, the coach did a TON of things to not make the score even higher. Telling the punt returner to not return, playing the subs, etc. It sounds like the score could have been 180 - 0 if they wanted.
Putting a huge beatdown on a team isn't - by itself - poor sportsmanship (and "bullying" lol). If a team plays clean, respects their opponent, is not taunting, etc., the score is irrelevant. I played numerous sports all through HS. I was on winning teams, and losing teams. And on teams that got murdered. I never, ever for one second wanted an opponent to back down on us, no matter how badly they were beating us. I fully expected them to play hard and give us their best until the last whistle, regardless of the score. How far we've come in the last 30 years . . . |

It's stupid.
HS football. If you suck, practice harder. And this happened in TX where they go through a lot of trouble to set divisions appropriately fair.

Isn't baseball (pro?) played that way in Japan? I have not read the article, but isn't it worst to play monkey ball (that's what we used to call it when we kill the other team) and not score.
I am waiting for the days when we can sue and win money if we don't get an interview or the job. We keep this up, its coming. |

Can't remember the exact details but I recently read of a similar bad blowout going on somewhere and both coaches and the refs tacitly agreed to just let the clock run during the fourth quarter of the game. Not a bad idea perhaps if everyone agrees ?

In AR hs football, when one team get ahead by 35 points the clock doesn't stop (mercy rule).
My town has had that rule invoked a few times. Jim

Just looked it up, it was a COLLEGE game this past September: Louisville vs Florida International U. When score hit 72-0 they all agreed to just let the clock run...

bully Use Bully in a sentence bul·ly 1 [bool-ee] Show IPA noun, plural bul·lies, verb, bul·lied, bul·ly·ing, adjective, interjection noun 1. a blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people. politically correct noun marked by or adhering to a typically progressive orthodoxy on issues involving especially race, gender, sexual affinity, or ecology. Abbreviation: PC, P.C. Showing an effort to make broad social and political changes to redress injustices caused by prejudice. It often involves changing or avoiding language that might offend anyone, especially with respect to gender, race, or ethnic background. As it is not 'habitual' it is, by definition, not bullying. Nor is it political correctness in action. It might be poor sportsmanship, although that would imply they did not, at some point, try to stop scoring. In kids sports there should be a mercy rule, otherwise shut-up and play. There should also be no incentives for teams to run the score up, such as use point differentials for tie-breakers in standings.

Bullying was the basis for whoever wrote the complaint to the coach. That person used the term bullying so he put the label on the behavior of the team.
I was not referring to the team behavior as PC but the individual's (writer) behavior being driven by political correctness or the desire to keep everything equitable between the two sides. Thanks for the clarification. |

I would be INSULTED if my opponent let off the gas because he was ahead by a large margin.
You play until the final whistle blows. Anything else is LOSER football.

I hope this stuff do not make it to pro sports. I think college boys are big enough not to get butt hurt over it.

The PC pussification of America continues.
BTW if you tell the players to pull back too much and not play the game as intended, the risk of injury goes way up. |
