Salt Lake City

I have some personal business in SLC later on, and am wondering if there is anything to do in the town?

the bayou is fun. lots of beers on the menu. although, i think the beerhive has better service. miller motorsports. lots of driving in the canyons, many of which are very accessible from downtown. temple square, if you are into that kind of thing. fishing. hunting.

. Nice joint and good food and company.

A fun live music venue is right across the street. The State Room | Salt Lake City, Utah | Live Music Venue - Home I happened to catch Texas Hippy Coalition, and Eve to Adam there.

Watch white people? J/k - but when you are there, see how many people you count until you see s/o who isn't Caucasian.

It is probably too late in the year for any action on Bonneville Salt Flats Racing? That's what I'd check out.

You could go to the Red Iguana for some mexican food. It's one of those places that used to be really really good and now it's good with a short wait.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- New census estimates show that minority populations in Utah have grown three times as fast as the white, non-Hispanic population since 2000.

In Salt Lake County, one of every four residents is a minority.

U.S. Census Bureau data, released Thursday, shows minority population in Utah grew by 55 percent between 2000 and 2008. That's three times faster than the 17 percent growth among non-Hispanic whites during that period.

Statewide, 18 percent of Utah residents are now minorities, up from 14 percent in 2000.

State Demographer Juliette Tennert says Utah is beginning to look more like the rest of the nation, in which 34 percent of residents are minorities.

Estimates also show Utah has the highest percentage of its population under age 5 of any state, at 10 percent.

The Pi Pizzeria is just off the U of U campus and is really good. The John Browning museum is a few minutes north in Ogden at Union Station along with a train museum and a small car collection IIRC.

Union Station | Ogden, Utah

The Pie Pizzeria - People's Choice for Utah's Best Pizza for over 30 years!

Temple Square is interesting regardless of your religious beliefs. The central downtown area is all within walking distance of there, and has lots of shops etc. It's been a few years since I have been there, and I left when I was 19 so I don't know the nightlife, but as I remember you have to buy a "membership" as there are no bars only "private clubs." It essentially amounts to a cover. You also can't order a double, you have to order a single and a side car. I don't believe you can purchase more than one drink per person at one time.

I lived there for about six years through the end of junior high and high school. It's a nice enough place, lots of great outdoors things to do. Wages are lousy, it's really tough to make a decent living as an employee and the cost of living isn't lower than many other places. That's one big reason I never went back. My mother finally left there to move to Washington state. She was an RN making $21.00 and hour at the state psych hospital. Her wages doubled as soon as she moved here!

Hard to beat the Red Iguana, but the line is thru the parking lot 7 nights a week. Downtown is very nice. Lots of action. Plenty of Mexicans in SLC, you just have to go to the right neighborhood. Its between the airport and downtown. Its now a lot more diverse than when I used to visit relatives in my childhood. Nice town.

oh, yeah. the pie pizzeria. don't go there if you like thin crust, thin toppings, non-fattening pizza. i love that place. i've been going there nearly 30 years and the pizza hasn't changed. the calzones are awesome, too. the pie calls their calzones 'zappis'... i have no idea why.

I would check out the Mormon Church visitor center. That is a good way to get an impression of what the Mormon faith is all about.

Not sure if they're still around but when I was a kid the treats were a small A&W root beer after winning a little league game, and on special occasions a trip to Dee's burgers.
I wuz to young to know anything about the night life.

They had a really good zoo back then and I enjoyed our annual trip to the museum of natural history.

Nice town…downtown is great lots of places to eat, shop. Temple Square is a must regardless of your faith. State Capitol is cool to check out. Plenty of places to grab a beer if that what you want, some funny rules about it but not a big deal at all. Red Iguana is cool but the Mole is over rated to me.

there is still an A&W on 400 south and 700 east. dees, too. my wife loves dees, childhood memories and such.

the zoo is pretty good and they have expanded a lot of the habitats. i felt sorry for the animals when i went to the zoo, but hogle zoo has, for the most part, made the zoo palatable for me.

the state capitol is pretty cool and they had a some neat things there, like the mormon meteor.... not sure what is there anymore as it has been over 25 years since i went inside the building.
