I think you have to jailbreak it for a UK SIM card to work. buy a pre-paid phone in London, they're a lot cheaper than calling with a US one. You can buy European calling packages from Verizon for your phone.

thanks Hugh. I've no idea how to unlock it , as stated I'm a moron. Prepaid is good idea.

I don't know how with a new one. I think someone here does. Look at the Verizon website for plans. BTW you can get a Verizon app that will let you make the changes from your phone. Just don't forget to turn it off when you get home. I do it going to Canada all the time. Watch out for data charges, they can be insanely expensive. Keep data turned off and use Wi-Fi when you can.

If you're not planning on using it a lot, you can use it at I think $1/min and about $30/100MB of global data. Roughly. Call them up and tell them you want to add the intl features for one billing cycle then remove it.

that would work too. thanks guys.

Better than a local pre-paid phone, at least your neighbor, family can a hold of you buy calling your regular number.

I got skype, purchased some time and used wifi

You can call any number w/skype and lots of places have free wifi: pubs, trains, hotels etc...

I know on ATT you can a-la-carte international texts and minutes during the billing cycle you travel, so maybe hop onto your VZ account and see if you can do it.

Jailbreak allows you to add apps that are not approved and do other stuff to the phone. The phone needs to be unlocked by the carrier to use other SIM cards (yes, sometimes there are ways the end user can unlock as well),

Unlocked, thanks Dave, wrong term.

Did you check with Verizon store here? Your phone should work in England, We did it in Germany a few years ago and thought it was reasonable. Added to the plan before we left, changed when we came home.
