Which radar detector is as dependable as the Valentine 1?

I had one and it was really good but unfortunately, it was stolen. I really don't want to cough up another $400 - $500 so I am looking for a good alternative. Which brand and model do you have?

wdfifteen 10-30-2013 02:21 AM

I've got a used Valentine I'll sell.

I'll take second dibs on that if the OP doesn't take it. I'll send a PM today. Thx.

speeder 10-30-2013 04:37 AM

Speeder did not give up speeding.

That is like asking what car is a cheaper substitue for a Porsche.

Porsche, there is no substitute. Same for V1. YMMV

red-beard 10-30-2013 05:42 AM

If you have a Smartphone, the new Escorts are excellent.

Yes. I don't trust my eyes anymore and my reaction times are too slow. I don't have any big, safe sedans anymore either. I used to drive as fast as road conditions would allow. My Mercedes used to top 100mph regularly. It's a lot more fun to go fast in the 911 at DEs and stick to the speed limit on the road.

What about a well set-up Bell?

Escort Live and an 8500 x50 have saved my rear end more times than I can count

Por_sha911 10-30-2013 09:09 AM

You probably won't be satisfied with anything else since you are accustomed to the V1.
Some things are not worth skimping on. Would you put a cheapo oil filter on your Porsche? Spend the bucks for the best and it will pay for itself. Used ones on flea-bay aren't that much cheaper than new ones.

Yeah, Live is like combining Waze with a radar detector. Great way to help protect against instant on and laser.

Detectors have come a long way.

My buddy Joe got a Fuzzbuster when they first came out.

We stop at a 7-11 one night, he gets a microwaved burrito and tosses it on the dash. Fuzzbuster goes off, he removes burrito, Fuzzbuster stops. He does it a couple of times with same result. We know it's not likely the burrito is setting the thing off but the coincidence was unsettling.

Few months later he and I are coming home from skiing and the damn thing is going off incessantly. We are on the Tappen Zee, Fuzzbuster blaring away and Joe without saying a word rolls down his window, reaches up, grabs Fuzzbuster and throws it out the window then rolls his window back up. Rarely have I laughed that hard.

does Live handle gps and traffic routing? or is it purely a map with radar notification? i use waze daily on my commute and find it invaluable (when it works). adding crowd sourced radar data would make me switch from a v1.

Cops around here are all instant on laser.....:(

I have a Passport 8500 X50 (blue screen) that's in my pile of stuff to be listed on Ebay.

I use a Passport 9500xi and love it. I put one in Mrs. Lee's car too. Both have paid for themselves many times.

Thanks for sharing the memories - too funny ^^^^^! Had one of them on the dash of a '73 911. CB's were also required for the well equipped speeder. LOL

Seriously? Does it have the woodgrain? If you or your father ever decide to part with it, would love to have one for my 1972 Ford Thunderturd. The complete nostalgia trip, 8 track and a squawking CB... we gotta a 10-99 on the loose.... 10-4 big buddy.

edit: never mind.... found all sorts of them on fleabay.

I drive 4-5 mph over the limit and my Valentine 1 sits in the garage...

Even when I'm only going 4 or 5 over, I still want to know when they are around running radar.

On the interstate I get away with 10 mph over and no detector.

That Escort live looks tempting... is there a monthly fee for the smart phone app?

If I was still making the trek to Vegas a couple times a year I would scoop one up.

Or a trip up I-5 to S.F.

However as I become more mature road trips are becoming less alluring... :(

V1 calls that SA = Situation Awareness...have had mine > 10 yrs...it's a security blanket.

I think I just joined the exclusive century club with this post!

porsche4life 10-31-2013 01:13 PM

Fwiw guys, the V1 has a smartphone app as well... I love my V1 even with out it hogging battery on my phone..
