ID This car....cool history...

To make a long story short:

last summer, I was out checking out garage sales in one of the neighborhoods around here. I picked up a box of random crap (antiquey trinkets for $5). In this box was an envelope with old picture negatives. Anyway, there was a photograph of a car in front of a house that I thought was very cool....

For the last few months, I had sworn that I had seen that house before, but i just couldn't put my finger on it. Anyway, the other day, I had an epiphany and remembered where I saw the house. Sure enough, the house is for sale and hasn't been lived in since probably the mid 70's. I ran over with the realtor and checked it out. It's completely not livable, and needs a complete restore. It's about 6000 sq feet, or so.

Here's the house today:

can anybody ID that car in front?!

I'm going to dodge your question, and just say that it makes this Detroit boy very, very sad to see how many amazing mansions in the midwest have fallen into decay.

Its got to be 1920-1930ish. By 1935 most companies and introduced aerodynamics into their design.

A Dodge of that era also looks pretty close.

Too big for a Dodge or Olds, I'd say Packard, about 1925

Definitely. Has the same hood ornament, looks the same except for the front bumper.

Very cool house. I wonder how/if the garage sale folks are/were related to the original owners of the house (which is pretty cool).

So, when are you starting work on the beast, eh? Just a cool half a mill, no problem.

I would take the house over the car - man thats a cool house. Maybe some developer will buy it and make condos? Is that in Indy proper? I think I have seen that before as well - there is a street not to far from Broad Ripple with some big places.

Yes, very cool, I was thinking that I'd love to have something like that.

It's an 80-year-old house that hasn't been used for the last 25 to 30 years. It is also on a lot that is just over a half acre. At that price, it is already overpriced for the area. Then you need to factor in the cost of the rehab. It is a romantic idea, but not practical.

It's not the Packard as posted... no space between the front and rear doors.

The front bumper looks like Type 61 Cadillac.

Still trying to figure if it was changed, the exact year, etc.... brb

... no luck. Post 1928, all Caddys seem to have the spare on the running board. And none seem to have the metal disc wheels, instead favoring metal spoked wheels.

But because of the bumper, door spacing, and disc wheels... I'm going to stick with a "GM" vehicle as my guess. Maybe a Chevrolet. Something like a 1929 Phaeton.

Normally, i'm all about restoring these places, but this house really is a teardown. The land MIGHT be worth 200K to someobody who wants to live in this neighborhood. A totally livable 5700 sq feet house a few doors down sold this summer for around $500K.

Anyway, back on the car...

It's the photo. There is a tree blocking the edge of the house on the first floor and the photo has faded or "edged" making the second floor too faded to see well.

I think you're looking at a late 20's Nash Six, likely a Touring based on the lack of artillery wheels.

THAT is the car. Nice one. Look at the sloping grill. Very unique.
