Drug/pot lingo question
I've heard that back in the day an individual could buy a quantity of pot, usually packaged in a clear sandwich bag, the depth of three of four fingers held horizontal. This quantity, as I've heard, was called a "lid".
Where does this "lid" come from? What is it in reference to? Thanks

From the interweb:
a lid, a baggie, an ounce The term 'lid' of marijuana goes back to the 60's. Back then you could buy a 'lid' or a 'can' of pot. The can was aproximatley 1 oz, the lid was1/8 oz. The term came from the practice of breaking up a brick (a kilo or later a key) of tightly packed marjijuana and storing and selling it in Price Albert tobacco cans. A can held aproximatley one ounce. the lid would hold aproximatley1/8 oz. No one weighed it really, it was all done by eye. By the time I was in high school in the early 70's the term can had gone away and the term lid referred to an ounce. The term nickel or dime bag was still used in the 70s too. But by that time the amount of pot in the nickel ($5) or dime ($10) would vary - though the price was still $5 or $10. But if you bought a 'baggie', it would contain an ounce and the price would vary. In the 60's a bag was a bag was a can was an ounce and the price for the ounce was 5 or 10 depending on quality. I don't know if there were 7 dollar bags or 8 dollar bags.

Been a real long time... but.. the "old farts" used to say that a lid was a sack but less than an ounce. How much less? Who knows!
Gainesville Green meant I didn't know that dope had seeds really until 1989... Average (dry, seeds, nothing fantastic but not dirt weed either) stuff was sold by ounces or parts thereof (1/8, 1/4, etc). $40 for 1/4 oz, price usually went down buying 1oz or more. Really good stuff was same, and $100-120 per 1/4 oz. but also by the gram as an option. Hash was by the gram ($10-20 depending on quality), hash oil was similar but hard to work with due to its oozy properties. Mushrooms (fresh) were by the dose, enough to cover the palm of your hand for $3 to $5 or you could go pick 'em yourself. Dried mushrooms were by the 1/4 ounce, $20-25. LSD was $5 for a hit, down to $1 per hit if you were buying whole sheets (100-150 hits per). 2 hits were enough for a real good evening, 1/2 a hit was enough for a newbie to see what it was like. Never tried coke or anything else, 'cause I *know* I have a very addictive personality and I'd like it - too much. Been 20+ years for me...

In the late 80's, quarters were $25-35 up to $45 for preemo. Two fingers in a sandwich baggie.
Mushrooms were scarce. Heroin nonexistent. Blotter acid was $1, $2 for double-dipped but required a full day of no obligations. Quote:
Only tried a couple times, but powdered coke effect was like drinking a couple pots of coffee, snorting a cup of clove oil, punching oneself in the nose, and running around the block a coupe times to increase heart rate. Crack was similar, except without the warmth effect and extremely addictive. No positive mental-value attributes. Not worth accepting that economic/lifestyle chain. |

Been clean for fifteen years now.You guys realize that because we posted to this thread we are all on a list now... right?

Blow is one of those drugs that will tell you lies, and sneak up on you when you least expect it.
I was around it for 15 years, ( had a group of friends who were regulars) and honestly, I could take it or leave it back then . I was happy to do it a few times a year, and never want for more. quite the opposite, a night of partying would usually make me want to stay away from it for a while. Then , somehow in my early 30's, I spent a weekend with a same group of friends, and I could not stop after that. . Went on daily for close to 2 years, before, I finally took a good long look at myself in the mirror, and hated the person I was slowly , but surely becoming. Just when you start telling yourself, that you are immune to addiction, is when you are in trouble. Been clean for 8 years now, don't drink, no drugs, and hell, I even finally quit smoking . 8 ball= 1/8th of an ounce of cocaine. My contribution to the drug pot lingo thread.

Coke is bad news. I had a girlfriend that did it in college, and ended up doing some. Boy, it was fun when you were up, but the next day you were DOWN. I was such surly A-hole the next day that my roommate (and friend) asked me to tell him if were doing it, so he could make sure he wasn't around the next day. I took note of that. And while it was fun, it sure as hell wasn't $100 a night worth of fun. I left it alone.
A friend of ours did not leave it alone. She stole from her parents, hung out with some seriously dangerous people, and did god knows what else to get it. Years later, my dad of all people came across her working for one his friends. Total coincidence. She had ended up marrying some mob guy in Miami. He ended up dead after he failed to pay back some loans. She was working as a secretary, and seemed to living a clean life. I enjoy MJ, but I can take it or leave it. Its against the law here in Ohio, and I follow the law. Save those antics for when I visit friends in Seattle.

Lid,,,,haven't heard that term in years. But I'm kinda out of that world. I don't buy none, I don't sell none & don't grow any more that I can smoke myself. My short exposure to coke led me to believe that its too damn good and needs to be illegal. That sheet will kill ya, in many ways.

This is why coke is so addictive. If you stay up all night doing coke, and have to be at work the next morning,, and feel like ****, you know what the best remedy is??? More coke, and viola, before you know it, you are doing it every day. Happens to the best of them.

Coke and working for me would never mix, unless my job was to smoke cigarettes and drink copious amount of liquor. Not sure how people would high level function on the stuff. I hear about athletes doing it and playing, man I couldn't imagine that. We partied before a softball game one time, I think I struck out but did not care. Coke is a bad juju for me.

I did drop acid and played sofball one time. Standing in left field it was hard to keep focused but when the ball was hit I could track it like a hawk going for prey. This was a looong time ago.
