Today was originally known as Armistice Day....On 11/11/1918 at 11AM the Armistice that Germany, France, Britain and the US signed took effect which for all intents and purposes ended WW1.

General James Doolittle was quite an indivdual as he was a pioneer in aviation. During the 1920's and 1930's he held quite a few air speed and distance records. When he passed away in the mid 1990's I felt a sadness that the world had lost someone important.
The Depression/WW2 generation had a can do pragmaticism about them. They were not adverse to sacrafice and hardship to accomplish a goal. These traits came out of the hard knocks world of the Depression of the 1930's. Their failing was their indulgence of their children and the creation of a social welfare society, because they didn't want people to suffer as they had to suffer. We can now see the legacy that the WW2 generation left America and the world with in the last 3 US Presidents all of which fall within the Baby Boom generation (1945 to 1962). |
One of the most pivotal navel battles of the south pacific was Midway.
It Allowed the American Navy Carriers to get close enough to the coast of Japan to LAUNCH the Doolittle raids. No bomber had ever been shot down a catapult launch before. A VERY interesting book, is to read South Pacific Naval battles from the Japanese's perspective and how arrogant then defeated they became. Very cool read about the whole war in the South Pacific..
