New/old spoon

This has been in the back of the shop for 3 years, so I finally bought it. It's an Allen & Thurber boot gun. .31 cal black powder, From what I can see they only made a couple hundred of these between 1837 and 1842.

Want!

Very nice piece! Are you going to attempt to fire it?

targa911S 11-10-2013 04:25 PM

yeah, I think so. It's in very good shape. Good bore, strong mainspring. It's called double action, but you can't cock the bar hammer, it only fires by puling the trigger through the full cycle.

It looks to me that it takes a percussion cap? Or is it flint?

id10t 11-10-2013 04:46 PM

Needs a rail to attach stuff.

targa911S 11-10-2013 04:59 PM

it's percussion. I will post better pics later. Here is a pic from the web. As you can see mine is missing the trigger guard. Good luck finding one of those!

Nice buy..........

Check with Dixie Gun Works. I think they still make a copy of this pistol. If so, they should be able to fix you up with a trigger guard. Should be fun to shoot!

wow great info Fred ...thanks!

Get a long handle tea spoon and practice your gunsmithin' skillz ...

targa911S 11-10-2013 05:11 PM

Not a bad idea either..I'll send dixie a pic of the gun and see what they come up with as well.

I like this idea....preferably something old, tarnished and ornate!

HHI944 11-10-2013 05:16 PM

So, what's the little stud on the front of the handle for???

targa911S 11-10-2013 06:05 PM

It's a screw. I think it adjusts the tension on the mainspring. I haven't had it apart yet.

HHI944 11-10-2013 06:09 PM

What kind of tools do you use for that?
I discovered that plastidipping a size smaller screwdriver worked pretty well for not marring the finish

targa911S 11-10-2013 06:27 PM

I have a whole set of special screwdrivers that are specially made for gun screws. They are straight sided as oppose to the tapered sides of your mechanics screwdrivers. When somebody says to me they want to work on guns, the first thing I tell them is to get a set of these screwdrivers. It eliminates those "boogered" screw heads.

Bike mechanic I know used to buy tons of $1 flat head screwdrivers and grind them specific to some screws when working on exotic, rare, weird, or old stuff.

That's how the bits in my wheeler set are, I'm just still a little neurotic about it on some spoons...
