Comet ISON Sightings!

Put em here! I have to wait till I get back up North in a few weeks to check it out.

not yet...........Venus is supposed to get BIG too !

Not easy to see yet, but hopefully, it'll continue to brighten. It's disappointing that it probably isn't going to be as spectacular as they thought last year.

Got a good pair of binoculars? Incoming Comet ISON's visible now - NBC News.com

Quote:

The potentially dazzling Comet ISON has brightened enough on its highly anticipated approach toward the sun that it's now visible through a decent pair of binoculars.

"ISON's head appears small and stellar through a pair of 15x70s optics."

The comet is currently as bright as an 8th magnitude star — too dim to be seen with the naked eye but easy to spot with binoculars or a small telescope.

I'm going to give it a shot. Checked the weather and yup, supposed to be cloudy tomorrow. :( Wednesday looks to be clear.

I've got an app on my iPhone for star gazing. I've got it locked in so I can track it kinda Star Trek like. :D

Renting a neat little telescope from the library this weekend - want to see and get a few pics. This comet has the potential to be spectacular in the coming days & weeks.

Here's my ISON shooting rig.

Using a 2x tele-extender, I have a 1200mm comet canon!

Little blurry (GoPro still), but I will also mount my iPhone to the camera, so I can hopefully get a good line on the distant comet.

I scouted two locations this evening, but both are near me and lots o' city lights. I am going to try and scout some locations a bit away from here for tomorrow night.

I'm in Southern, NJ Can I see it from here? Which direction do I look other than up?

Porsche-O-Phile 11-13-2013 04:59 AM

Sweet! The closest approach to the sun is on Thanksgiving (around 800,000 miles) - I'm hoping it comes around intact which will make for some amazing imagery in early to mid Dec...

Love your setup - very cool!

It's right near the constellation, Virgo. A little off to the right.

Dang, Dave, you're all in.... excellent! What is the interface on your DSLR? Is that a phone?

slodave 11-13-2013 09:27 PM

It's my iPhone with the Star Walk app. I figured it would help get me in the correct location. It doesn't interface with the camera, just has a little red target in the center, which I can use to "sight" on the comet or there about.

There are some clouds in the sky tonight. I think I get to sleep in. Tomorrow looks to be clear.

Thanks Dave

This seems to be a good, if not a little bit dry, reference for comets. Finder charts, projected brightness curves and orbital details...

I've given up for the moment. It's been hazy or cloudy everyday since I grabbed the big lens.

dhoward 11-22-2013 08:47 AM

You have to sneak up on it. You may find that rig too much to get a nice full comet picture. I've gotten good results with 70mm.

masraum 11-28-2013 03:24 PM

This sucks - BBC News - Comet Ison destroyed in Sun passage

I remember when the REALLY big one came through, what, 2006 or 2007. I think it was Haley-Bopp, I was hoping for something else like that. Better luck next time.

Jim Richards 11-28-2013 03:25 PM

So much for that.
