shock collar. greatest thing since fried checken
 

bought a shock collar. the wife has not nagged or back talked me in a week!

just kidding. my wife is awesome.

i have a lab wiht OCD when it comes to a ball. she will not get closer than 5 ft because she thinks we will take her inside. one quick shot and she is a new dog.
she will come and sit next to us now.
she took off after a golf cart. zapped her about half way to the cart and it put an end to that.
she started to go to the neighbors house. in the past she just ignored me. one zap and that is fixed.
same with our other dog. i think i have zapped her 2 or three times. now she sits here with us. before, this dog would jsut look at us as she ran off while giving us the finger. not any more.

Yep amazing results here too.
Ours has a tone function too. Now we rarely if ever use the shock. Personality change as soon as the collar is on.

Same here with our Lab puppy. I hardly ever use it anymore.

I'm glad my parents didn't have a shock collar for me...

My Dad had the smack collar. Was very effective.

So much easier to shock their @ss than take time to train them. Just zap the bastards.

We trained our dogs with one. The idea is not to use the shock to cause them pain, but to get their attention. Same as click training, but the zap it like tapping them to let them know you gave the command.

My lab mix does better with it than the cattle dog.

Yup. One warning than a zap at the lowest power that gets their attention. My kids were afraid to go outside with our Lab because of how she jumped up at them, it was just play but she effectively tackled the younger ones. Now she's fantastic, even the three year old will go outside and play with her alone and there's no issue.

my lab is a great dog, extremly smart. but she is sooo obsessed with the ball that thats ALL she wants to do. she figured out very quikly when we tried to use that to catch her to take her in. she thinks that as long as someone is out side there is a chance they will throw the ball, and if not, maybe someone will come out.
we use to have to open the back door and drive the jeep around to the back yard to chase her inside.
she has started chasing squirels (with ball in mouth) and bikers and golf carts. when sh takes off after one, there is no getting her attention. first time she took off after a golf cart i called her name then knocked her on her A$$. got her attention quick. now i have done just a few light and very quick "attention getters".
no collar on yesterday and she came up to me, with ball in mouth. much better.
we have tried to work with her, but when she is outside it is all about the ball. if no ball, thanks to the neighbor, she will go find a stick.

the other dog could be walking through the neighbors yard and we would call her and i swear this dog would look at us like, "F you" im not coming home yet. so far she has been good about coming when we call her.

The day I resort to using a "shocking" technique to modify any dog's behavior is the day I know I have failed miserably as a trainer :confused:. I'm sure they are effective (and NO, I don't think you're "hurting" your dogs), but TOTALLY unnecessary...I'd prefer to put a shock collar on the "trainer" and modify their behavior instead....different strokes, and YMMV. I have "the gift" when it comes to modifying doggie behavior (from over-exuberant Labs to "ticking time bomb" Pits), and I get RESULTS. Would any of you guys consider a "shock collar" on one of your children, 'cause I'm sure it'd work too? Think about it, and reconsider...it's a TOTALLY UNNECESSARY technique and there are equally effective ways without one...YMMV.

ps: People are always amazed at the way my dogs have always behaved, and I've always been able to modify other people's dogs' behavior too....sorry guys, but you've just hit a "sore spot" with "me" on this one.

Aren't you supposed to use the tone capability of the device as well? Most of them have a high pitched tone that signals the animal. Associated with the shock and they will respond just as well.

But the shock needs to be used on the wife to get the appropriate response. :D A cattle prod works well if you can't catch them to put the collar on.

we hid all the balls,. sad thing is thats not the biggest. she found one that was about 6 or 7 ft but thinner. she will bring us firewood at times.

I bet you don't have the basics instilled in her either (sit, stay, come, etc.) with total obedience....everything else is secondary and easy-peasy once they know YOU'RE in charge :)

ps: I don't mean to come across as "harsh", but I've just got a different way of doing things.

Steve we're just gonna have to disagree on this one (no problem)...I too get 100% obedience, 100% "off leash" (after about 6 months), with both voice commands and hand signals. I'm sure this is an issue where many "experts" (I'm not one) will disagree on...

No doubt they work but please don't overuse them.
