my wife has an 07 4cyl stripped accord. It is comical how easy it is to work on. I just did a complete service is less than 2 hours. Not a single problem in 80k miles and I expect it will outlive us all.

The problem with the corolla/accord "safe bets" is everybpdy knows it and the asking prices seem to reflect this

When my daughter was 17, we got a new Sebring - big mistake, lots of issues, not a very good car at all.
Next was a 99 4Runner, she loved it, no worries, she drove it for 4 years.
The 3rd generation 4Runner is built very well, and will go for 200K+ miles with only minor upkeep. One timing belt change at 100 -120K. Good resale when you want to get rid also.

Last April I bought a 2007 Chevy HHR LT2 with the 2.4L engine, auto trans and such. Paid $7500 for it from a US Marine that was retiring and going back to Arkansas. Did some playing with it by adding a dash wood grain kit, Pioneer flat screen GPS and some stripes. It gets 35 MPG at 65 on the highway and 26 or so around town.

It has Chevy running gear that is still in production so that is a non issue. The only weird item is the "sealed" transmission that has no dip stick and the owners manual says you look at the ground to check for leaks and never change it???? I used Craigslist and looked only at private sellers, no dealers.

In your position I would be looking for a five year old Corolla or Civic over 100k miles.

I suggest you do not buy a nissan sentra for your daughter.
My wife did that and it's cost me $$$$$ ever since even though the new transmission was covered under a wink wink warranty.

Low miles Kia is the best bang for the buck.
I carpool with a guy who has a kia soul hamster wagon and that thing is really nice. They're big $$$ but you should be able to get a nice kia optima with 50k miles at the bottom end of your price range.

Agree. Another little sister in law bought a low mileage Sentra that quickly proceeded to blow the head gasket. I've had the Soul and Optima as rentals, both are nice cars and comparable to the Japanese offerings.

Nissan Versa hatch?
Ford Focus SVT? Might only be available in manual though, not sure?

Oh my god do not buy a sebring!!!! I doubt you are thinking of it, but just to re-inforce, do not buy a chrysler sebring!!!! Total hunk of ***t, I had a 2001 and I spent more time doing deep engine work than in any 30 year old car I have ever bought. That was my first foray into buying an "adult's" car instead of a junker, and two months later I bought a 76 BMW2002 for 900 bucks just so I had a driver. I spent more time changing primary tensioners on that sebring than I did driving it, and as a result I will never ever buy a chrysler product again.

Ok, the link to the 996 thread was a joke...

But in the interest of upholding the PPOT tradition of offering something you didn't ask for.

New 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage DE in Huntington Beach CA | Serving Irvine, Anaheim & Garden Grove | VIN: ML32A3HJ2EH004793

I know nothing about these cars, but at that price I am tempted to go look at one just for giggles.

Thank you everybody for your excellent advice I really appreciate. I will go with your suggestions, once again thanks. Scott

In the 5-7K range, don't overlook some entirely decent domestics. Ford Focus and Chevrolet Cobalt come to mind. In a the next size up, an Impala that is a few years old hits the $$ range and is a pretty solid car.

I'm a pretty big fan of the Focus. In the $$ range you are looking at, you can get the sedan, the two door hatch, a wagon, or a four door hatch. The hatches look much nicer than the sedan in my humble opinion.

My dad grew up in Randleman, NC, the hometown of Richard Petty. He knew the Petty family, and his dad owned a gas station that specialized in tuning Hemi powered Mopar products. After he returned from Vietnam he bought a '68 Roadrunner with a 383, and he has owned Chrysler products ever since........right up until he had a Stratus and Sebring at the same time. Those cars were so bad that he has never owned a Chrysler product since, today they have three Hondas and a Mazda.
