Samsung pays Apple $1b in .05 Coins!
|
Scratch that!!! Damn idiots reporting jokes as news....
|
I would be astonished if there were 1 billion worth of nickles available in circulation to pull that off.

That's 20 x's more nickels than are in circulation.

The problem with stories on the internet is that few people read past the headline or care to find check if they're true.

I'd be surprised if Samsung ever pays Apple at all, regardless of what the courts rule.
|
They'll be lucky to get one red cent.

I wonder how many nickles are in active circulation.
|
I was thinking the dime is the lowest legal tender (one doesn't have to accept pennies & nickles for payment).

There's 20 nickels to the dollar, so I come up with 20,000,000,000 nickels.
At 5 grams each, that's 100 billion grams = 220,462,442 pounds A 2006 article claims that there are approximately 20bn nickels in circulation, so the Apple payment would require every US nickel in the world. Since I have 3 in my pocket, Samsung will be short of the total. I have seen other sources that claim there are as many as 25bn nickles in circulation. There is no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. |
From your link:
It would take 2,755 18-wheeler trucks (max legal tare 80,000 lbs) to carry the money. Now I wonder what it would cost to hire 2,755 18 wheel trucks to haul 80,000 lbs each. |
Depends on how far they gotta haul it? Anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand
|
20,000,000,000 * 5 grams = 100,000,000,000 gram = 100,000,000 Kg
= 100,000 metric tons An 18 Wheeler can carry ~20 metric tons --> 5,000 trucks We usually pay ~$1000-1200 per 500 miles |
