Need help diagnosing intermittent static on new car stereo
 

A couple weeks ago I installed in my car, all new:
Kenwood head-unit (bluetooth, HD radio, AUX/USB)
MBQuart 6 1/2" coaxial door speakers (no crossover)
Soundstream Rubicon 130 watt RMS stereo power amp

I am getting static/crunching sound on the left channel.

Here is the weird thing, it only happens for a minute or two, then when things seem to "warm up" it goes away and everything sounds fine.

When the noise is there, if I switch inputs from radio to AUX/USB it goes away, also when I turn up the volume the static doesn't seem to increase.

I have already checked the connections.

As a test I am going to plug my android phone into the RCA connectors on the power amp and test it while cold to see if I hear any static.

Thoughts?

I am a tech so I could open the power amp and look for a bad capacitor or cold solder joint.

something's defective on radio side. Fact when you shift to USB problem goes away means the outputs are OK.

Good news is I just have to change the head unit, +/- $100 for a decent bluetooth unit.

Bad news is I have to throw another $100 at my beloved money pit... I mean my car.

I'm done with Kenwood, I was very happy with the JVC I had installed in a previous car, considering a Pioneer.

Alpine.

I'm using the same Alpine I bought 10 years ago, never a problem.

Not sure the Alpine of today is the same Alpine of ten years ago... ten years ago they were top of the line.

Also not sure I can find an Alpine for $100

Considering re-installing the old radio I pulled out (also a Kenwood) no bluetooth but it is free... free is good...

I have had great luck with Pioneer flat screen GPS double din units for the past 6 or 7 years now. In my F350 I had a X940BT and in my current car I now have a X950BH which plays by USB, blue tooth, etc. The biggest issue is the double din size and the necessary adapters if necessary. The GPS seems to do auto updates from the satellites as the streets in the San Diego area change now and then and the GPS reflects the changes!

There is great debate about the double DIN over on Miata.net, bottom line I'm 99% sure a double will not fit my 1996 Miata, 'the cubby' under the radio is more like a 3/4 DIN... but fear not Pioneer makes a pop out screen single DIN.

Uber cool but on my budget not going to happen.
