Show me your...Nuts and Bolts Storage Solution

I have tons of nuts and bolts in the garage. Most of them new, so I don't want to throw them away.

Need to organize. Don't need to catalog by size, but maybe organize by type of fastener (wood screws vs. washers vs, machine screws, etc) and separate SAE from Metric.

What have you done????

Those big wide mouth plastic jars for peanut butter or better still, peanuts and cashews make great containers. Clear, non breakable, easy to reach in and grab a bolt, nail or screw. I keep one for each: wood screws, nuts and bolts small, nuts and bolts large, washers and lock washers, nails...

I inherited a cardboard box full of old bolts, nuts, screws, washers and what not from my dad.
My son calls it my typhoid box.

Cheap harbor freight bins in homemade racks.

I just get those plastic stacking bins about 3 or 4 in. wide by 5 or 6 in. deep. I've never found a system I'm really happy with & I've tried lots.

What about using engineering drawing file cabinets with small plastic boxes in each drawer. That way the drawers can easily be pulled out and everything is right in front of your eyes. I have used those for small parts and everyting else that fits in there. I find them very practical.

I steal them from work. They keep things well organized. I don't.

My father would take baby food jars, nail the lid to a board and fill the jar with the nuts and bolts. Easy access by simply unscrewing the jar.

The new drawers for expansion! :). We have another vidmar that is half that tall. As well as the brown one with deep drawers.

a friend gave me a truck load of 3' x 4' x 10" steel cabinets split into 5-6" x 8-10" compartments..gave a couple away but couldn't find room in my shop for even 1.. asked everyone I know if they wanted 1 or all of them but had no takers. hated to do it but after a couple months I loaded them up with some other junk iron and parts lying around and sold them for scrap. they would have been perfect for seperating nuts and bolts, pipe fittings and small parts

I'm using an old type cabinet and plastic organizers. Wish I could remove some of the walls in the type drawers but they are handbuilt and extremely sturdy. Been working slowly on a 911 bolt library, want to catalog bolts, bolt makers, size, application and year. So far have Karro, Verbus, Kamax, Dera, Lobo, Graeka, Nedur, F&H, 3F, Dorn, Arbed, Omel and Ribe. Going to take a while, hope to start a thread on Technical and Early S someday to get clarification. A lot more work to do on this.

This is about 5-6 cars worth of hardware.

Thats what I have, about 30 Lawson drawers for nuts, bolts and hardware. Love it...

porsche4life 11-24-2013 08:28 AM

They are awesome Joe. Just a little hard to come by, and pricey when you do!

Oh Man, that's cool. I have thought about something similar for a very long time. I'd love to see a thread on your system.
