We have that law here in MD also however the law is there to reduce crime
The law was started because people would leave there car running with the keys in them and that would increase chance of theft
The law does not apply to remote starters cause the car can't be moved without the keys

The system we had in the Honda would shut down if you pressed the brake pedal. Hard to steal if it doesn't run.

I don't think it was an option in 01 for our F150, but maybe it can be retrofitted with a factory system. Otherwise it's an aftermarket system.

As others have said, they are great when they work (my wife says the same thing about me). If its not factory, I would only have one if I can do the installation so that I can heavily document what wires are cut or affected so that I can reverse the install with confidence. That doesn't fix the problem of being stuck if it goes bad but at least you know it won't take a week to figure out how to get the car running again.
