Guitar Guru's can you I.D. this guitar
I traded for this guitar tonight. I played it yesterday and fell in love with it. It is very light maybe 7-8pds tops and old. The Di Marzio pickup I know is not original. Missing some knobs and the truss rod cover. Can't find no serial number or make on it. Looks to have been refinished at some point. I would like to paint it farkin jet black, but don't want to ruin it. Any ideas by looking at the way it was put together who made it? Thanks

Based on the layout of the pups and how the bridge does not line up, I'm going to say it's a home built. Not to mention, the plug for the cable doesn't look to be very professional.

That's what I was thinking as well, I always wanted a black V, I think I will totally take this one apart and put it back together with some used parts that I have. Even though the strings are tarnished, it has a remarkably nice action and fits my stubby fingers perfectly.

Get some decent tuners for it and you might just have a nice guitar there

Actually have a set of tuners out in the shop as well as some good used pots. I was given a second DiMarzio pickup with the guitar, so I will probably install that when I put it all back together. I think the only thing that I will need to actually purchase will be a pickguard.

What did you trade for it?

If you do paint it, I'd recommend trying to get the tail piece, bridge, and pups to line up correctly. Dunno if it's the angle of the pix, but it looks like half the strings don't line up with the pup poles.
BTW, it looks like mahogany from here.

Hello, operator? Get me Albert King! But yeah, the poor thing is a mess. A kit, at best, methinks. Fixable, though. Everything necessary available through Stew-Mac.

I think I have decided not to paint it and just leave it as is. The reason being is that even though it appears to have been re varnished at some point, the neck is very playable with what ever finish that they did use on it. and I think if I put a new pickguard and truss rod cover on it it will look fine.

Believe it or not, I have been looking for that V for over 20 years. I used to own that very one. Back in the 80's, I was tuning for Paul Stanley. That was one of his pieces. He gave it to me after a show in Cleveland, then the ex took it in a divorce. That thing has some history!

I like that the pick guard shows plenty of use.
