Gonna ditch my cable internet company

I have cable internet at the MT shack. Its expensive, slow and unreliable. If snow is in the forecast, its gonna go down. For $38 a month, its too slow to even stream Netflix.

So, I just ordered a Straight Talk mobile hotspot for $79 from Walmart and a 4GB pay as you go sim card for $40. It uses Verizon cell data, so I have good coverage. In the winter months, when I'm working on my suntan at the beach somewhere, I'm hoping the 4GB lasts a few months.

My main worry is that my Dropcams use quite a bit of data. I've heard 60GB per month each. But, I can turn them off/on at will using the Dropcam app on my phone, so that solves that.

Anyone else done this?

You'll burn 4gb very quickly using laptops and streaming netflix. Like under a week...

Richard - I'm in the same boat....So, ST charges $40 for 4 GB? How much for 6 or 8G?.

I'm on Verizon hotspot thru a router at home....Sux trying to get by on 5 or 6 GB a month.....Dish is a new option here. I've heard the Satellite speeds are better than they used to be.

Make sure to check Amazon and Walmart for sales on the ST SIM cards, cuts the costs down. You can also find ways to get cheap(er) gift cards for those or maximize credit card rewards when you do buy them.

That's what we have (6 gb). Shared with three phones and two computers. We get close to the limit every month (no Netflix or streaming thouh).

Its $10/GB. I think you link a CC to your account and it tops off as needed.
