Car Thermostat Quesiton
Does an automotive thermostat regulate the coolant temp of the car or is it just for getting the car up to operating temp ASAP?
Thx!

More to the fact: the thermostat regulates coolant flow from the engine to the radiator and back @ varying levels to control engine temperature to maximize engine efficiency.

IF you're having overheating issues, it's probably stuck closed. Cheap and easy to replace.

It restricts the water flow, allowing the water to become heated by the engine, then allows it to flow to the heater core so you don't freeze your ass off in the winter.
In the summer, it restricts the flow allowing the radiator to efficiently transfer heat, keeping the motor cool.

My car is getting a few MPG's lower that it should city/hwy. I noticed is takes about 10-15 minutes for the temp gauge to get in the normal 12 o'clock position on a typical warm LA day.
My theory is it takes too long for the car to get to normal temp b/c my thermostat is stuck open and the car is running a bit cooler than it should even though the temp gauge is not showing it....because those temp gauges do not show exact temp when they're in the middle...they just show a temp range. I'm hoping the engine is running a bit cooler due to the stuck thermostat which is affecting the MPG. I'm hoping a new thermostat will allow the engine to run at optimal temp. It's a M50 bmw E36.

I had a thermostat start to seize up (not opening enough) a long time ago in a $100 5/10. Rather than risk running way too hot, figured the best thing to do was remove it entirely as a temporary (couple of days) measure. After which it never got anywhere near normal temp - barely registered on the temp gauge - until the thermostat was replaced.
