Is it an appreciation expressed to someone or just a self-congratulations at how successful you have been able to navigate this world for as long as possible? |

The origin certainly is thanking a deity.
That said, it never hurts to sit back a moment and look at your situation. By default life sucks and is complicated. So, if you find yourself healthy and in a positive situation, it is good to reflect on that and appreciate it. That's what I am usually doing around the holidays. Cheers, G |
