Sold my truck and other things
I sold my 2006 dodge 2500 diesel yesterday to a friend of mine. I had been thinking of selling it since I got rid of my travel trailer. My friend called up and asked if I would be interested in selling, I said sure. I gave him what I think was a good deal, but not a bad deal for me either.
I plan on just driving the Boxster for now. I rarely have a need for a truck, but I have always had one. It seams strange not to have one. Maybe I'll buy a 1/2 ton to replace it. But about all I haul is mulch and firewood, which I can always have delivered. I now only own two cars and one airplane. I have been getting rid of quite a bit of my stuff. At 56 I had acquired quite a bit and it was getting to be to much trouble. It kind of hit me when I was getting prices to have a metal building put up to store it and have more room. Instead I sold 2 project 1970 911's and my 73 911 that was a driver. And quite a bit of parts that I had picked up along the way. I liked the 73, but honestly the Boxster is more fun to drive and it has a/c. Ill probably sell the Boxster in the spring, not sure what I'll replace it with. Maybe a newer Porsche or a Mercedes SL. Or maybe just buy a new 1/2 ton truck. Or just drive the Boxster and see how many miles I can put on her, 105,000 so far.

Your post resonates with me because I've taken a similar stance to simplifying my life as well. Haven't off-loaded many large items, but quite a few smaller ones have gone away in the last year. Before I bring anything new into the house, something old goes out. This spring, a couple of the cars are going away but not my 911.

I can feel for you. I,m 62 and since I retired at 55. We have bought and sold a winter home we had in Florida, a rental 4 plex (which had a 3 car garage half full of stuff and a duplex .Several cars , 2 sailboats,(27 and 34ft),a motor boat, and Jeep we had in Fl., a car trailer ,and downsized from a 3 + acre hobby farm (with a 2000sf house and 4 outbuildings) to a small 1904 brick cottage (1100 sf).I,m not ready for a condo yet, if ever. We are now living downtown in our nearest city. walking distance to a grocery and several pubs, resturants . With the kids all on their own we had 3 extra bedrooms I hadn,t been in in years.
Still have a 2 car garage behind the brick cottage, but needed to build another 2 car behind another duplex we still own nearby to store a car,2 canoes, bicycles, tools and other stuff . I have read that local storage units is one of the biggest growth area in North America. My wife thinks if you haven,t used it in a year it should go. I think if you haven,t used it in 20 years then maybe. We are working on a compromise. Good luck

I have been in the process of unloading "stuff" for a couple of months now. Last month I sold my backhoe, equipment trailer, and 2002 Dodge truck. We are down to 2 cars (excepting the p-car, which is stored for the winter), my 2003 Subaru and my wifes 2000 Saab. I like the lower insurance payments and the fact there are less things I have to worry about. Of course my new dilemma is that my temporary garage (shelter logic) came down in the big snow Tuesday (12+ inches) and is sitting on top of my tractor...

We put the house on the market and after having too much room to store things we are thinning out the piles. We are also going to buy a smaller house (like 50% smaller) and are not about to start it out stuffed to the gills with "stuff"
We take full sized pick up loads to the shelter for battered women almost every weekend now. That is our chosen charity for many reasons. The only good I see in the gathering of things over the years is that someone is now using them. I am really digging the size of my house now, I actually have room. ![]()

Sometimes there's needs to be a through stable cleanout. Although I don't know if I could replace my cummins with a gas truck. Even if you don't need it a cummins is a nice piece to own.

You should feel great about unloading the Dodge if you like A/C. 2006, especially if it was a mega cab, had way too many issues with the system. Screens, compressor, electric fan clutch... total nightmare.

In the past year, I've sold 3 snowmobiles, 3 motorcycles and a tractor. Still a ways to go with 3 homes, 2 longhoods, 1960 190SL, 13 motorcycles, 4 snowmobiles, 2 John Deere, 2 cars and a PU.

Amazing when I think about it. When I finished University in 1975 I could have moved everything I owned on the back of a motorcycle. .

I've been seriously thinking about down sizing myself. At least I'm down to 3 P-cars now.
But in my home I have so much "stuff". At some point it just becomes clutter.....ugh.....

Yet, I'm sure for all of us, lots of our unused clutter has some real market value, and we don't want to just give it away but the idea of listing it for sale is like......ugh. Other unused clutter has only sentimental value. Speaking for myself, I sure don't need it all, but it is hard to decide what to keep.... I moved from Boise to Portland years ago with a tiny utility trailer of stuff I thought I really needed. Furniture, clothes, tools... ALL of it is gone except for tools and my very first "Good" stereo (and all my vinyl). In hindsight, I could have moved all the stuff I needed in my car, with scads of room to spare for road snacks. Now, I have a house, a garage and and an outbuilding chock full of "new" clutter.... All of it is managed neatly and arranged on shelves and taken care of, I won't live like a hoarder, but I would pity my family should I meet my demise unexpectedly. "Why does he need five black coats? Have you ever seen this many shoes? What's this crap under the bed? Ten wristwatches? WTF?" Question - how many of us have purchased a tool or a toy in the last month (or more!) that we have still yet to use? I know I'm guilty. I'm going to have to start taking Angela's approach and get rid of something old before I can bring in something new...I should start with the damn teevee, to tell you the truth. What a waste of time. I jokingly call my house my "Containment of Creative Intention".

I know what I have stored has value but how much surprizes me..
Last year I lost a large quantity of my stuff when a storage unit I had was pilfered. I initially figured my loss at a few thousand until I started adding up replacement. From a downsizing /hoarder point of view the thief did me a favour, but my replacement cost estimate is substantial . At least I only need to replace some of it , not all What would you other hoarders estimate your stored stuff is worth, by the cubic foot? What does it need to be worth to bother paying to store it ?

My wife has been hauling a lot of the stuff to goodwill. I'm also starting to give some stuff away to my kids and other relatives. Some stuff I'll sell, but I really don't like fooling much with it. We plan on downsizing the house also, so that gives us some incentive.
I'm not getting rid of everything by any means, but if I don't have a use for it, I'm thinking why am I keeping it.

I took a truck load of samples I had kicking around to a friends store today. Tuesday I'm taking her another truck load. I just got the 911 back from the detailers. She did a great job. If it's sunny tomorrow pictures and it's for sale. Mazda's for sale. Three more cars to go too. Down sizing and moving 4 hours to my other house.
