CA glass recycling - wine bottles?

Sounds like CA will no longer permit CRV and non-CRV glass to be mixed together, so all of the little recycling places around the grocery stores in our area no longer accept wine bottles since wine bottles are non-CRV. Setting aside the "logic" of the whole state recycling structure, the result is that wine and spirits bottles are considered scrap.

From a little research, it appears that there is little value in scrap glass - if you can find someone to even take your scrap glass. I'm not enamored of driving all around LA begging someone to take my empty wine bottles and our community doesn't do recycling pick up with your trash.

Seems like a bad result to toss them in the landfill, but there also appears to be absolutely no real demand for recycled glass outside of the CRV program.

Anybody have any recommendations or knowledge? We're in the larger Pasadena area if that helps.

CA press release with the change to "simplify" payment at recycling centers by prohibiting mixing CRV and non-CRV glass:
New Rule Simplifies Payment at Recycling Centers. October 1, 2013 Press Release

A small mom and pop type of winery? Maybe they could also use it as a slogan that they only bottle with recycled bottles?

I wish I had an answer for you. Here in San Jose, we have a great recycling program. They take the wine bottles no questions asked. As a plus, if the city does not get them first then the homeless that go through the trash and recycle get them.

yes, they can reuse the bottles and save $1-$2 each time; a friend of mine does this

also, see if your city/county has a dropoff site

It is a real PITA to redeem anything to get your 5 cent tax back on your drink purchases. The place I go does it by weight. Divides glass into clear and colored. Brown, green, blue all go in the same hopper.

Maybe you can contact a company like

BluMarble - Recycled Bottles to Glassware

They may want your bottles.

There are several companies who use bottles to make other products. Good luck.
