Numbers don't always tell the whole story. I'd never pick a 4 valve 916 over an old carb'ed 2 valve SS. These things have plenty of power, and they are simple machines - easy to work on, pretty bullet proof, and you can ride one all day long

916 desmoquattro = liquid cooling, difficult and expensive valve adjustments, and if you spend more than an hour or so in the saddle, better have your chiropractor on speed dial. The 916 is a sexy machine, but it belongs on the track IMHO. If you want a classic Italian road bike, I don't think you can do better than the 900SS

Yes I know I am now a PP cliche, but I think what draws us to both Porsches and Ducatis as opposed to newer cars and bikes that are undoubtly faster, is the fact that a 911 and a 900SS both have soul. They speak to us. Their lines are beautiful. Everything comes together just right.

Very little compares to the frame on an SS. I can stare at them for hours...

I agree regarding the draw of the Ducati and 911. I picked up a 1995 in San Francisco in April of this year and rode it home to Toronto alongside my 21 year old son on his 1987 BMW K75.
Wintering beside the fireplace at home now.
