Saving Mr. Banks....... my review. .
Went to a pre release of saving mr banks last night.
I'll try not to spoil anything.... The movie is about how Walt Disney convinced the author of Mary Poppins to let him make her book into movie, I know what you're thinking....mary poppins....blah blah blah lol I have never seen mary poppins, maybe some clips here and there but that's it. So I sort of went in blind. .... This story is actually very interesting, and was absolutely written well, and is based on actual events. The casting was perfect, I think Tom Hanks did well, I have seen a ton of old Walt Disney documentaries and he pulled him off. .. Emma Thompson will probably win an Oscar for this role, I also predict this movie winning every single award it gets nominated for..... it was that well done. It takes place in the 60s, which they nailed, and backstory in the early 1900s.... It is not your typical Disney movie, no squirrels or talking walnuts, probably not ok for young kids as there's some deep content. Go see it, you won't be disappointed, even if you are not a Disney fan..... |

Thanks for the review and head's up.....I'm a big Tom Hanks fan and also grew up with the magical Disney films...the vintage (and IMHO best) ones......
Released in 1964 and won 5 Academy Awards. Dick Van Dyke was an absolute HOOT!

I know, I know... "it is a children's movie" but the acting is stellar and the effects for the time we rather advanced... good story and a good message too... you might be surprised at how good Mary Poppins is and how much you like it.

I plan on it, just one of those movies I've never got around to watching. Going to buy my wife the 50th anniversary edition for Christmas, I bought her the big pack sound of Music last year.... that was another one I hadn't seen....

My wife is over the top Disney crazy. Hell we got married at Disney world. Walts first studio is here in Kansas City and we belong to the "thank you Walt Disney society" that's restoring it. They had a pre showing of Saving Mr.Banks on wensday night. It's a really great story. I thought it was a little long. One of my girls fell asleep near the end.

Glad you liked it. It was a low budget movie for us, $35 million IIRC. It took us about 4 months to film. Walt's office was recreated in a studio/warehouse in Valencia, CA. It had on a wall something like 17 real Oscars. It also had a guard 24/7.

Good job, Hugh!
I've been delving into mid-century modern design lately and LOVE that whole period of creativity in our culture. Here's a glimpse....looks great!

I had no idea about this movie. Looks like fun.
I think Tom Hanks has become the Jimmy Stewart of our generation

Stewart per Wiki: Stewart continued to make missions, uncredited, flying with the pathfinder squadron of the 389th Bombardment Group, with his two former groups, and with groups of the 20th Combat Bomb Wing.[49] He received a second award of the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in combat and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He also received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. Stewart served in a number of staff positions in the 2nd and 20th Bomb Wings between July 1944 and the end of the war in Europe, and was promoted to full colonel on March 29, 1945.[41][50] On May 10, 1945, he succeeded to command of the 2nd Bomb Wing, a position he held until June 15.[51] Stewart was one of the few Americans to rise from private to colonel in four years.[10][35] Hanks per Wiki: In June 2006, Hanks was inducted as an honorary member of the United States Army Rangers Hall of Fame for his accurate portrayal of a Captain in the movie Saving Private Ryan; Hanks, who was unable to attend the induction ceremony, was the first actor to receive such an honor.[70] In addition to his role in Saving Private Ryan, Hanks was cited for serving as the national spokesperson for the World War II Memorial Campaign, for being the honorary chairperson of the D-Day Museum Capital Campaign, and for his role in writing and helping to produce the Emmy Award-winning miniseries, Band of Brothers. |
