Wow this is why folks think Porsche parts cost so much
My rear engine cover doesn't release very well. You have to have someone lift on it while pulling the release handle. I have lubed the bottom mechanism and it appears to have good travel. The gate appears to completely clear the hole.
![]() My 84 has the tea tray and A/C condenser both mounted in the lid so it's very heavy. I know it needs new strut shocks, but I had thought that maybe a stronger spring in the upper part of the latch would at least make it pop up enough to make it so one person can open the lid. I thought hmmm, maybe our host sells just the spring and I could double it up or something. When I went to the catalog here is what I found. Pelican Parts - Product Information: 930-512-052-00-M100 I will admit that it kind of took by breath away. So buying a new one is out of the question, anyone have any other good ideas on how to get the lid to lift that 1 inch needed? I checked to see if it were possible to increase the preload on the spring, but all the adjustments seem to lean towards adjusting the plunger contact. I'm sure that new struts would help and they are on the list. After brakes, tires, shift linkage bushings.. |

spring
Hey Red,
I have a 78 that I put a RS tail on so the end result was it was heavier. I looked at buying an assembly from a Turbo, because they come stock with a stiffer spring to pop their whale tails, but they don't sell the spring on its own. So, I welded a tab on the passenger side deck hinge and installed another shock to help carry the load but the original spring still did not pop the lid when I pulled the release. I measured the original spring height and went to a industrial supply store near my house. I couldn't find a stiffer spring with the exact same height, but found one that was a bit taller and higher K (stiffer) than the original spring. I installed it and adjusted the plunger but in full compression, the spring was a little too tall. I cut off about 1/2 from the end of the spring and it worked great. The spring was about $3 and the time invested was a couple hours. Hope this helps. |

Pits, Yea I was wondering about that idea. So you just replaced the whole spring rather than adding a second. That would probably be much cleaner and easier.
I was thinking that if I wanted to buy one of those support rods from OH that you would still need to make that first pop happen. OK I'll bite, what the heck is an AS body? is it a racing unibody in white? Funny thing is some parts are pretty reasonable, but you wander across a $190 metal stamping and it makes you go ?? |

One possible solution was to get an Orangutang named Clyde, he could pull the release and reach back and lift the lid at the same time. While I stood by with a piece of PVC to fit in place.

The length of PVC was to prop the engine cover up? Or to protect yourself from the orangutang?

Buy a used one from a junk yard take it apart and put in the spring of your choice. I gave up on the hood props years ago. PVC pipe with rubber tips in the trunk. Can't completely blame Porsche for higher prices. The dollar is in the toilet and continues to tank. Gov't/fed policy.

Change the spring or fabricate a spacer to add preload to the existing spring. Some measuring and calculation required...

that's what the two rubber snubbers are for. they have a spiral thread so you can screw them out sufficiently to act as a lid popper. you may need new ones if they're hard or deformed.

Looks like the same part used for the front lid of a VW Thing.

Just a word of caution.
A long time ago I adjusted my spring with a washer and the result was a jamed engine lid. I broke the cable trying to get it to open. Not fun...

The price for that spring assembly is eye watering... the retainer at the end was broken off when I bought my car. I thought I had done my research on porsche cost of ownership for an SC, but when I got my car home and looked up what I thought would be a cheap fix, I will be honest, I had some serious buyers remorse.
But then I was changing the oil on my BMW E46 and I noticed something.. there's two of these things holding my hood down, and they are dimensionally very similar to the Porsche part. I bought one and took out the plastic spring retainer / spring seat which holds the spring at the end. It was a perfect fit. You can take the spring off this part and replace it on your car and it should work, but you will have to live with the galvanized look. If you really wanted to, I suppose you could blast it will a little yellow zinc "look" spray paint so it will blend in. Unfortunately I don't think you can just swap the entire part in.. the mounting holes are a little differently spaced for the BMW part, but it's no big deal as it comes apart so easily and you can use your original mounting plate. Good luck. Pelican Parts - Product Information: 51-23-8-229-807-M9

I wonder if you could "space down" the latch by adding some washers to the back side of the sheet metal where the circular catch bolts up. I would think that this would force the spring to compress a bit more. same effect as adding spacers under the spring as javadog mentioned...

It couldn't be this simple - or is it??
Have you tried spinning the existing release mechanism spring around the post? My trunk release did the same thing and a good guy at P-shop told me to spin the existing spring around the post counter-clockwise (I think?) about 5 or 6 turns to reset the tensioning position - it worked for me.
