I want to know how they get the nice, neat pattern on the water in the first place

It is an interesting process. Printing is a deceptive name though, they are doing a water transfer application of a print. I'm curious to see how that stuff holds up.

A few years ago someone posted a video showing the same process being used to "paint" a guitar.

Pete, that is interesting. I'd like to dunk my whole car in burled walnut. On the other hand, 'carbon fiber' wheels would be sweet. Does anybody do that stuff around here?

Not that I know of Jerome.....I could dip it in a road salt/chloride solution but I don't think you'd like the results.

I friend just showed those videos to me this past week. He says no one here in LA does it...yet. He's wondering if this is a business opportunity. Looks pretty cool.

My BIL does that as a side business and I help on occasion when I have a free night. It is a really cool process... There are quite a few folks doing it, most do it as an add on to their regular gig; a gun shop or taxidermist for example. Lots of guys do it out of their garage or rent a small space.
The DIY kits offer real inconsistent results but a decent dip is possible. Also, it's a steep learning curve as different shaped parts require different dip angles, back taping etc.
There are a few folks doing it in LA that I know of.

There is a company in NY that also does this. I had to pay a visit on another of their lines. They do all the camouflage for rifle stocks. No two are the same.
