slodave's Gibson SG project.
It's been three years to the day that I started (and subsequently finished) my Les Paul project. At the time, I had talked about a Fender project for the following year, but things happen and it has yet to materialize. Some of you had also mentioned documenting that build too and I will. But, it the mean time, I picked up a SG project to finish for another Pelican. I poked and prodded him to build this guitar, but it became a bit too much for him. I had already done a little work on the fretboard and neck a while back.
*This project will not have daily updates for a while I have other projects I am working on as well and will work on this sporadically for the next month or so.* Here's how it looks now. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387948905.jpg There are a few Ooops in the body that will need to be sorted. If the body is painted a solid color, it would make the fixes very easy if not, I've got my work cut out for me. More on that later when I deal with it. Tonight, to honor the starting of guitar projects on Christmas Eve., I worked on the fretboard a bit by flushing the rough cut fret ends to the fretboard. I was going to glue the binding on, but the acrylic glue was old and had hardened and with everything closed tomorrow, I'll finish that Thursday. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387949263.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387949278.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387949291.jpg SmileWavy |
I can't wait to see this one!!
|
That's beautiful, Dave!
Wow......very cool. Love to watch the progress...please keep us posted! |
Oh so much fire wood! Good luck.

Here are some previous pix of the neck build from a year ago. This neck became complicated very quickly. The plans for the SG use a certain neck scale length, while the fretboards that StewMac sells, is cut for the LP scale. I had to work from two plans two make one neck.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950771.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950785.jpg Tools of the trade for a lot of this project. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950796.jpg Finding the center line on the neck. Using the easy method. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950818.jpg Center found and marked as well as the tenon. A few more lines and it's time to go to the bandsaw to cut the rough shape. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950833.jpg Now that's a straightedge! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950843.jpg Drawing Lines.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950854.jpg More lines! This SG blank should see a saw blade tomorrow. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950868.jpg So close! I just need the blade to come an 1/8" or so. This is going to be fun. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387950878.jpg |
First angle cut. This is for the top of the headstock.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951267.jpg Now the question is... How to cut the remainder?? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951280.jpg I think the bandsaw will work. I'd rather get a smooth cut from the table saw, but since the area in question will be cut off anyway, a little ridge should not matter. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951292.jpg Test cut made to check the angle and it's good! Now to trim a little more off. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951303.jpg Time to get dangerous! First pass to create the headstock surface. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951316.jpg Headstock face cut. I cut a little too close to my line, but that's okay, as there is a Holly veneer that gets glued to the face anyway. Cut is nice and smooth! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951332.jpg Neck is separated from the blank with a rough bandsaw cut. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951347.jpg Side view.. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951361.jpg To cut the rough top shape of the neck, I need to use the scrap, but I want to send it back to David. It's not enough for another neck, but it can be used to practice the neck shaping. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951376.jpg |
To save the scrap, quickly cut some MDF..
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951634.jpg Trace the scrap onto the stacked MDF (glued together) and cut on the bandsaw. Bingo! Instant base. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951649.jpg The headstock overlay that David won in an eBay auction and had sent to me. Nice looking and will work well for this project. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951669.jpg Making the cuts for the "ears". Not for the faint of heart, as you break all sorts of table saw rules. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951683.jpg The cuts for ears are also good for removing material so things fit in the vice. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951706.jpg Time for the hand held router again to cut the grooves for the maple splines that reinforce the headstock. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951719.jpg Grooves done. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951739.jpg Splines glued in place. Next will be to cut them flush to the headstock. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951752.jpg Trimming the splines flush. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951765.jpg Flush. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387951776.jpg |
Learning to cut threads via a die.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952156.jpg Setup to cut the curved truss rod channel. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952171.jpg Channel cut. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952187.jpg End of truss rod that will be covered by the fretboard peened. That ain't coming off again! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952204.jpg Cutting the threads for the headstock end of the truss rod. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952218.jpg The end that will be covered by the fretboard needs to be cut flush. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952243.jpg Flush. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952259.jpg Neck clamped to the drill press to drill a partial hole for the truss rod and nut. A plastic bell cover will cover this hole. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952272.jpg Done. One small hole needs to be drilled to connect the truss rod route and the bell hole. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952284.jpg |
Truss rod test fit and cut to final length.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952566.jpg Neck pretty much rough cut and ready to glue the headstock ears on. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952577.jpg Ears glued on. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952590.jpg Maple spline to cover truss rod, cut and test fit. Will glue tomorrow. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952608.jpg Truss rod spline glued in place and upside-down to let gravity work for me and prevent any glue from getting around the truss rod. I coated the rod with wax as well, to prevent glue from sticking. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952620.jpg Headstock overlay glued. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952633.jpg Overlay on and dry. My part of this project is done. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952646.jpg At this point, the neck had been sent back to Washington... |
I had actually done some work to fix the fretboard as well. I had brought the fretboard beck to Washington this past September when I went for a visit.
Looking through a jewelers loop, we can see that the filler is pitting and has a lot of "white" in it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952987.jpg The inlays for frets 17, 19, and 21 need to come out and be replaced. This thing is as sharp as a razor's edge. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387952996.jpg One out, two to go. Pocket is a tad to shallow as well. I will deepen the pockets for the 3 inlays, before setting the new ones. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953006.jpg Knife is pointing to a bit of a high spot that was contributing to the thin inlays. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953015.jpg Who says CA (super glue) is forever! Super solvent for a super glue. Fretboard may looked warped and is, but a minor thing. The stress of the grain and sudden switch from a very humid environment, to a dry one is to blame. The fret grooves contribute as well. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953029.jpg Refilling the gaps around the inlays that will remain in the fretboard. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953081.jpg Needs a bit more work, but will be just fine in the end. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953090.jpg Another inlay partially filled. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953102.jpg This is from the first inlay (3rd fret). Much better than before. It'll need one more coat and sanding, but will look great. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953113.jpg As the filler seeps into the gaps and shrinks from the water evaporating, a nice valley is left. This started as a "hill". Two more applications of filler should level it out. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953126.jpg |
Back to the inlay repair. MOP blanks arrived and templates made.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953423.jpg New inlays cut and shaped. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953446.jpg Time to finish this up. Made a quick holder for the FB. The two pieces of wood will act as guides for the Dremel. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953458.jpg The pockets for the inlays needed to be deeper. This one is almost flush with no sanding. One down, three more to go. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953469.jpg I decided to replace one more inlay. Tedious. Trace the pattern and cut with a jewelers saw, then finesse the edges with files. The short sides are not straight, but have a slight curve. Mother of Pearl also smells like burned finger nails or hair. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953482.jpg New inlays glued in place. Time to sand the new ones flush to the FB, then fill the gaps between the inlay and rosewood. After that, one final sanding and the FB gets set back to Washington. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953495.jpg Inlays flush. Just need to go through the finer grit sandpaper after filling the areas around the inlays. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953508.jpg Fretboard finally done. Time to box it up and send it back to Washington. (Though I ended up hand carrying it up there.) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1387953522.jpg |
Hey Dave! What an enormous job you take on. Very impressive. Merry Christmas!!
|
Excellent craftsmanship Dave. Did that start life as a kit?
|
Wow. This is really cool. The guys on the guitar forum I frequent don't take as many photos.
I have an idea for a neck with custom inlays. Is that something you'd be interested in taking on someday? Nothing near as involved as this build. |
Dave you're amazing !!! I might as well be watching brain surgery,, as I know I could never do this stuff,, Very cool!!
|
Really nice work and excellent photos and narrative.
Thanks for sharing Dave! |

Most excellent Dave.

Thank you. all!!
Matt, no kit. Scratch build that was started by Porsche-poor. Steve, all the pix but the first three were updates for the other Dave as I was doing the work. :D But, I do like documenting the work. Makes it easier to go back and see how certain things were done. Yes, with instruments, you have to get past the traditional 1/16-1/8" rulers and go for the really tiny stuff. It was hard to get my dad to wrap his head around the idea that things needed to be measured in 64's. "Why? It's okay that things are off a 1/16" when building a chair". This isn't a chair, dad! Patience is a virtue with these projects, no doubt! If you want to send me a PM with your idea, please do. I'll see if it's something I can do. :) |
Dave has the patients of Job. Me not so much. I can't wait to watch this get completed.
|
Great job so far Dave!!! Can't wait to see the finished product! Not to hijack, but can you ID this headstock? It is off a les paul styled guitar, but not really sure of the make, I don't ever remember seeing a burst type headstock on any gibson les paul, epiphone or any other lp clone...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388023473.jpg |
Fun to watch someone with real skills doing fine work.
|
Hey Dave,
Got a picture of the body, it is a bolt on neck model. I was thinking at first that it was a Epiphone because of the truss rod cover, but if you look at the headstock, it is the Gibson open book style that Epiphone doesn't use. It looks sort of old, so I am thinking that it is a 70's model Japanese lawsuit guitar of sorts. Don't mean to hijack your thread, just want your opinion when you get a chance between tasks...SmileWavy Fwiw, I will be making another trade for this one. Will be putting those paf's in it that I got last week or so. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388034401.jpg |
Hi Bill,
I would be leaning towards a kit guitar. But I can't tell for sure from those pix. The open book/mustache is not right. The "V" in the middle is too wide, more like a U. The kit guitars came with a rectangular, uncut headstock. If that were the case, anyone could have tried to copy Gibson's headstock. The lawsuit models were spot on in this regard. That said, the lawsuit models did have bolt on necks, but so do the kits. Here's a kit for reference. http://notrightinthehead.net/wp-cont...t-set-neck.jpg As for the truss rod cover, it's very easy to buy Gibson covers. I'm sure it was too difficult in the 70's or 80's either. The headstock looks to be in rough shape based on the pic you supplied. Almost looks like one corner is busted off. It also appears to be mahogany. Lawsuit models would have had a black veneer. Looks like just all about the kits I looked at have mahogany (or whatever wood they are using), no black veneers. The cavity for the pots could shed a little more light. |
Thank you for the compliments. I really appreciate it.
I just think of myself as a guy that is lucky enough to have a workshop to do this in and I find it peaceful to do so. It's also about the only place I can check my ADHD at the door and focus on a single task. I love working with wood. Whether it be a guitars, the 917 inspired shift knobs I turn, turning in general, or making furniture. :) |
Thanks Dave,
I will upload some more pictures when I get it. |
slodave, thanks for sharing your work with us again!!! PLEASE make the SG to a 1965-ish era standard???!!!! You know, the ones with the Maestro tail piece!!!! Angus!!!!
|
|
Dude, YOU ROCK!!!
|
There should be a little more work coming up. I just haven't felt like going out of my way to buy acrylic glue. Tomorrow...
The finish isn't up to me. :) We'll have to see how that plays out |
Awesome stuff, looking forward to the next update!
|
You do great work, Dave!!
|
Thank you!
A little NYE work. Got the two long sides of the binding glued on today. In a couple days, I'll trim the extra off and glue the bottom piece. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1388549914.jpg |
My dream is to have a Slodave guitar with Wolfe pickups. Until then, I will just keep banging on the trash cans and pretend that it is music that I am creating :) Happy New Years guys!!!
