Cold morning duckin'!

17 degrees and snowing when I left the house at 4:45. Got colder as the day went on!

Ended up with 11 between four of us. Mallards, gadwall and pintail (no sprigs though:( )

I have been getting them in the South SF Bay over the holiday break. In my T-shirt. I like that duck hunting weather.

Ah, do those pics ever bring back memories. I used to live for that stuff. For me, it was mostly the dogs - I used to love to work the dogs. Had some good ones over the years. Alas, by the time I was into my forties, I found myself going less and less. I just had less and less time for it. When it came down to "whaddaya gonna hunt?", and actually having to make choices, big game won out. Even with that now, though, I have to be very selective. That, and I've spent too many of our hunting seasons overseas in the last decade or so. So, thanks for posting - it warms my heart to see someone getting out there and doing it. Scratch that dog behind the ears for me...

I hear ya higgy. Stopped hunting when my son was about two and thanks to a neighbor I'm just getting back to it. What's really nice is he likes to get in and get out. Most days we're home by 9 or so. If he were an all day kind of guy I'd still be on the sidelines.

Had to break ice this morning! Not as many ducks but a good pleasant hunt just the same.

I grew up as a kid in North Dakota where duck hunting was some of the best in the country. Skies would be dark with duck especially during migration as it is on the north/south flyway. When the farm ponds were frozen over with ice my dad and I would use a bottle of Mom's blueing (real blue in color sold for bleaching clothes) and we would mix it with several buckets of water. Then we would go out on the ice and dump all the buckets of water in a big circle followed by spreading it all around with brooms. It would remain so blue and appear like open water the ducks would try to land and either skitter or bounce off the ice. We would be laughing so hard that it was hard to shoot them. I know people back in No. Dak that still use that method. Not meaning to brag but, I am still known to have a lot of expertise on how to set goose decoys correctly in fields.
