need help (quick)
OK, a Jeep shop just replaced the oil pan in my older Grand Cherokee. Now 36 hours later I get a "check gauges" warning light and the oil pressure gauge is going haywire (goes from zero to proper temp then back to zero, back and forth).
Any ideas before I go back and rip the Jeep shop a new one? thanks. |
I would check the oil.

I would check for Porsche content, then probably post to a Jeep forum somewhere.

. Some newer engines have a temp/ oil level sensor in the side of the pan and a newer Jeep might have that. You have said temp and pressure so I am guessing you mean your pressure gauge is fluctuating.Your oil pressure gauge wire was probably in the way when the pan was changed.
Like a 911 the gauges are electric and electric gauges are easily affected by a loose wire at the sender.BUT first check the oil level with the dipstick to be sure they remembered to put oil in after changing the pan. (It does happen ). Then I would suspect the push on connector at the appropriate sensor is loose. If you can,t locate it easily ,then take it back to the garage that did the pan and have them fix it . It should be as easy as pulling the connector off and pinching it slightly with needle nose pliers and then reattaching it. The location of the sender varies by which engine you have so I can,t help you actually locate the sender but I think it,s the most likely cause of swinging gauges on any vehicle. If it has oil in it. If the garage didn,t disturb the wire when doing the pan then it,s likely just a coincidence that it happened now Porsche specific content isn,t an issue . |

Check gauges and a bouncing needle you do immediately think wiring.
Agree most likely just a bad connection. We all know what havoc bad grounds wreak on 911s. And FWIW it's been my experience over the last 11 years that the 911 owners here are generally car enthusiasts and the breadth of vehicles owned by us has created a collective of info that is hard to rival even from a dedicated (insert make) forum. First place I would come with a question about a non P Car. |
I agree with the other guys, they probably dorked something up when changing the pan. Crawl under and check the connections. Also check the sensor itself, it's possible they cracked or damaged it when removing it from the old pan and installing it in the new one.

Oil pressure sending unit failures are common on Jeep/chrysler products. Don't beat the shop up too bad just yet, may not even be their fault. The senders on the l6, and v8 jeeps are not really in the area of the oil pan, and sometimes, just unplugging, and plugging one back in, or disturbing nearby wiring is enough to finish one off.
