I have multiple facial piercings as well as tattoos and on more than one occasion I have gone for an interview only to be informed that I would not be given employment if I chose to keep wearing my piercings. All arguments aside, I am forced to ask "why?"

I'm never surprised when I see young homeless (otherwise looking apparently able-bodied) people around PDX having multiple facial piercings and tattoos visible from the neck up.

PDX, while progressive, is not a town full of cretins. As an employer of people...I'd most likely never hire that guy even if he was qualified for a job in my company (which requires a very high level of specific skills) simply because I wouldn't want his image to be ingrained in my customer's minds.

Afterall, cretin is not a protected class.

I can 100% understand the piercings - they are a hygiene and major appearance risk. Cutting gaping holes in your body also takes some level of "not caring". You don't want to to hire someone like that - they will be leave you in a lurch if they don't feel like doing what you need.

Tattoo's are another matter, I'd ask about them. The "why" could tell me a lot about the person.

Sorry Oregun. Not a fan of Portland after my last trip there. People are wayyyyyyyy uptight there. They look at happy laid back Californians like we are the weird ones.

If he knew what the issue is, clean it up and fix it. What's the problem? he's not ready to grow up and joint the real world or else he would have try and go after jobs in his field of study. Maybe he did who knows? I am going to stereotype here, most people who looks like that still want to play and not work.

I was in the very conservative city of San Marino's (suburb f LA) building dept today. A young man in his late 20s / 30s with tatoos up to his neck, arms covered, and those big holes in his ears waiting to speak to the building people about possibility of opening a flower shop in the city. I immediately see the women body gesture and tone of voice changed behind the counter. It was not for the better. I am thinking to myself, Why TF would a guy looking like that want to open up a flower shop in a Conservative city like San Marino. This place is full of seasoned Doctors and lawyers. Imelda Marcos owns a home there. I didn't want to be near him. He just looked dirty. Now you boys get off my damn lawn.

Actually lived quite a while in central O.C. and in the interest of full disclosure, detested L.A. about as much as they detested us in happy happy joy land.

But remember the best defense is a good offence!

I have driven the freeways of Portland and honestly don't find the drivers any better or worse than Smell Lay.

However I won't even rent a car in Boston, on foot and public trans all the way!

Went into a chain sandwich location one time for lunch. The sandwich preparers arms were covered in tats. He also had a few tats on his face. I walked back out and down the street to the other local sandwich store. As a customer, I always question the level of food cleanliness and adulteration by the way the server appears.
