Zero Motorcycles - any takers?
The name could be a major joke but the more I read on Zero, the more I'm liking. Given the rapid advancement and focus by other electric vehicle manufactures, this company is looking really good.
Respectable specs. Has anyone seen or ridden one? Thoughts? ZERO MOTORCYCLES – The Electric Motorcycle Company - Official Site Zero Motorcycles ![]()

I don't know...hard for me to let go of 'suck, squeeze, blow, & go'...and the sound of such.

^^^Probably the number one hurdle to cross any bikers mind. Regardless, these electrics have their place and could evolve into a 'mad-max' cult rivaling petrol powered air pumps.

Motorcycles are all about overwhelming your senses. Its their purpose. IMHO, electric motorcycles take away too much of that. Probably OK for a bay area commuter, though.

Commuter would be the first to target market. But if they ever they figure how to shed battery weight and get the overall to, lets just say 300 lbs. and take advantage of an electric motors torque... might stir some emotions. Right now weight is in the 380 to 450 lb.
Surprised to see a fairly wide dealer network for such a new company. Haven't seen one yet in a showroom or on the road. Back in 1992 we built this. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/6348338-post297.html Time to wipe the dust off of it and fit some of this later tech.

Prices on those are decent, and range is do-able with a destination.
Nice. Going bigger at $40K Lightning's Electric Superbike takes 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb "Lightning claims 0 - 100 mph (160 km/h) time of 3 seconds, and acceleration from 100 mph to top speed (166 mph for the basic Superbike) in less than ten seconds." Another at $56K The Phoenix rises: Mission R returns, and now it's road-legal "This provides 133.4 ft lb/180.9 Nm (0 – 6400 RPM) torque, and over 160 hp (150 kW), to push each machine to a top speed of around 150 mph (241 km/h). Acceleration from a standstill is similarly healthy, with 0 - 60 mph (96.5 km/h) clocking in at three seconds." |

I'd love to give one a try, but the Zero uses CHAdeMO for quick charging and those seem pretty scarce in the US. I wish some fast food joint like McDonalds or Starbucks would partner with a charging station provider, which would make them incredibly available and draw business since I'd buy something and use their wifi while killing an hour waiting to charge.

I think they would make great urban commuter bikes. They won't be replacing gassers in the near term. Pretty hard to ride a battery bike 1500 mile to Sturgis.
