I could not fight it any more, I modded my diesel .

I had no plans to mod this truck. I liked that it was quiet, and stock. It all started when a customer had me remove his 4" exhaust to go back to stock to trade his truck in. He did not want it back . I kept it, and after looking at it in the back corner of my shop for 6 months , I finally gave in, and hung it last weekend, along with a 3 inch down pipe,( complete pain in the keester) a ppe boost enhancer valve( t's into the waste gate signal line, and tricks it into making more boost) and an air intake. I have an edge juice tuner, but I am not going to install it yet, until I get an egt gauge, so I do not cook it .
I instantly noticed that it spooled a lot quicker, and had significantly more power. It is a little louder than I would like, but tolerable at idle and cruise speed. It barks when you are on it though. I may add a quieter muffler this summer.
Today was my first road trip with this setup, and so far, hand calculated fuel mileage is 19-20 mpg. Not too shabby for a 4wd quad cab dually, ,that will easily pull 10 thousand pounds without breaking a sweat. Once I add the tuner, I should see an extra mpg. I am impressed. I'll check it over the course of the next few tankfuls, but that is a great improvement over the 16 I was getting before.
So now, I am one of "those guys" . Flame away

What is the truck?

fastfredracing 01-17-2014 02:35 PM

2004 Chevrolet 3500. Lb7 Duramax.

My father in law has the GMC version of that truck with a 6 speed. If you could figure out how to hook it up, enough torque to alter the rotation of the Earth.

Flame you for moddin' a diesel? Fat chance! Torque is our friend! Loved our diesel truck and the best upgrade was the downpipe and exhaust. Especially the down pipe. What a nasty constrictive thing the factory provided.

Hot-rod diesels rock - enjoy it!

Making them breathe better is never a bad thing, unless you put a K&N type filter on it. That's a very bad thing and a fatal mistake for a turbo diesel that is sucking in massive quantities of air. The air filter is usually not the restrictive part of these engines but if you do ever go aftermarket on the intake, go with a larger paper filter rather than a filter with larger holes. Sucking in dirt will kill that Duramax dead.

You are smart not to run any kind of tuner or chip w/o gauges. Those trucks came pretty fast from the factory so I'd be real careful adding power. I'm not against modding diesels if it's done intelligently but often it's not.

Good luck with it! :)

Agreed. A K&N filter (previous owner) lead to the early demise of my 914/6 engine. After the rebuild I switched to paper filters.

My 01 powerstroke has the big paper element, a wicked wheel 2 (better turbo impeller), a DP tuner with 5 different power settings,Walker big truck muffler (straight through instead of the factories 180 design), huge trans cooler and guages. For a 4 wheel drive dually it has very impressive grunt. Pulls my 32' fifth wheel amazingly. I do have to watch the egt's sometimes climbing hills but its way better than stock

DP is the only tuner I'd trust on those trucks.
