OK you guys shamed me into it ;) Last night I went to Dick's Sporting Goods and purchased a 10 gun Field & Stream gun safe. It's fire rated for 30 minutes at 1400 degrees and seems to be quite well built. I will be installing in our basement where we do not have mold/rust issues on anything else we store there. Having said that I think preventative maint. is in order. The gun safe came with four absorbent packs of silica ? which I will keep in there. Are any of you using anything like Damp Rid or similar ? Of course I'll keep the guns clean/oiled. The safe will be installed against a wall that is currently just open studs. So I'm going to reinforce an area between the studs where the safe will be bolted to the wall. Then I'll sheetrock/paint and be good to go. They'll have to work overtime to steal this beast :D I'm going to build a small work bench next to the safe that will be my gun maint. bench so it will be easy to tinker. Thanks to all that chimed in. SmileWavy

I live in a gated, guarded, and patrolled neighborhood. Last year we had a rash of daytime professional thefts. They brought a metal detector and a cutting torch. Nothing was safe. Ten homes and they never got caught. Gun safes, vaults, and strong boxes all fell. They even got the coach of the Spurs home. Bastages! At least slow them down and get cameras!

i dont think we "shamed" YOU into anything. ya did the moral ethical correct thing to do by buying a safe.

imagine yer HK-91/FN-FAL/M-14/SCAR-17/barrett .50 were stolen and KILLED PEOPLE! or lets make it WORSE and ya bought a slew of class III full autos.

try living that one down. headlines plastered all over papers and nightly news "some dumb azz buys a slew of bad azz "assault rifles" and they get stolen and people get slaughtered by crazed meth heads.!"

oh BOY yer gonna be SPECIAL NOW!

dont think i want/need/that DRAMA EVAR!

having AWARE/INFORMED/ARMED NEIGHBORS IS KEY to burglary prevention.

had a friend when i was like 20 yrs old or so who had a .22 pistol stolen. that pistol was USED TO KILL SOMEONE! leo's came by as he was the 1st purchaser of pistol and questioned him. held as evidence for YEARS and then finally released back to him. buddy ended up selling it because of its tainted history.

I keep mine in a heavy safe. I'm worried about someone taking them during a burglary. The safe also holds my valuable to me items, like a couple watches and some papers. It gives me a little peace of mind.
