Wife's Iphone 4S on straight talk(AT&T) for $45, but might switch her to my TMobile plan unlimited talk, text, 2.5G data then slows down for $60, if I add the wife to my plan +$40, then add a kid +$20.
So to add all of that up (3) phones Unlimited talk, text, 2.5G data equals $120. less AAA discount (bet you didn't think to ask) $108 |
I switched from AT&T to ST.
I had to jailbreak my Iphone to get everything to work right but it's worth the hassle |
I switched to ST several months ago. Reception is absolutely hideous IN my house, but pretty good everywhere else. Up in your area, Rick, I get great reception. When switching, you'll probably have to buy one of their phones. Porting your number over is pretty easy, but it might take a bit. Data plans are $40/month for unlimited. If you go the $30/month route, you're pretty limited on what you can do. I think 3 megs of data, 1000 texts and 1000 minutes talk time. I went the $30 route because I can't have my cell phone on me most of the time, anyway. It's hit and miss whether or not I can download picture messages people send me. That's pretty annoying, but I've been happy with everything else.

ST is a no brainer if you have wi-fi at home. Make sure to use it when you're around the house and I doubt you'll come close to the 2.5gb. I was worried about the limit before I switched but then I actually looked at my Sprint bills and realized I hardly ever got to 500mb, let alone 2.5gb!

You may have to get a bit deep into settings..etc.. Updated: How to Setup Straight Talk & NET10 Data and MMS on Android, iPhone & Windows Phone | Prepaid Phone News |
No you can order just a sim directly from their web site. That's what I did.
|
BTW, anyone on ST should be watching Amazon. The pre-paid sim's go on sale now and then and I think the monthly charges go down to $32/month if you can find the 12 month versions.

I went to Wal-Mart tonight and bought the Bring Your Own Phone plan from Straight Talk. The kid working there seemed very knowledgeable, looked at my Verizon iPhone 4s and said it didn't need to be jailbroken to activate the ST SIM. Well, it's not working. ST's website won't take my phone number to port, you can't speak with a live human there and you can't return a SIM package that's already been opened.
Do I really need to jailbreak my iPhone? If so, how difficult is this, is it risky and will it delete any info on my phone? Really regretting this already. |
Not sure about with a Verizon network (CDMA) phone. I've only ever dealt with GSM (AT&T). My understanding us the CDMA phones don't use SIM cards at all so none of this will work with them (a big reason the Verizon phones aren't worth as much in the secondary market). Maybe it's different now. Dunno. Did the guy say specifically the ST SIM was compatible with CDMA (Verizon) phones and networks?

As of May '13 IPhones could not be used on Straight Talks network
Phone news You can check your devices compatibility on the ST site Get your phones MEID # by dialing *#06# Check Unfortunately the ST website is craptastically hard to navigate, one compatability page tells me my Droid Razr is OK... another page says no.. What makes it more confusing is that ST shows Iphones on the website... |
My phone definitely has a SIM card. I removed it last night and got a prompt on the display that read "no SIM card." I have a co-worker who went to ST from Verizon and the guy at Wal-Mart assured me my phone was compatible. He looked over my phone first too.
|
Also, the ST site shows my phone is compatible. Went through that test a few times.

My (GSM) iPhone works fine. Has been for over a year. Yes I'm on iOS 7
|
I was able to return our ST packages to WM tonight for a refund, even though I had opened one. Now I'm looking at Page Plus, but I really doubt I can switch to any other service without unlocking and/or jailbreaking my phone. At this point I think it might be easiest to buy an unlocked AT&T phone on Craigslist, switch it to ST, load all my stuff on it and then sell my Verizon iPhone on CL for what I paid for the AT&T one. Is there an easier way?

Ayup.
Talk & text only, good coverage. From Target......don't even know (or care) who the provider is.....25 bucks a month. In case you can't tell, I'm an old non-techno geek. I can't even get my speel cheker to work full time. |
*shrug* dunno. I recommend jail breaking the phone. (current or new). It gives you oodles more flexibility.
A used iPhone 4S (gsm) can be had for around $200-ish (32GB). That's what I use and I'm perfectly happy with it. |
Still haven't gotten this done. What a PITA. PP says they won't allow Verizon iPhones. Lots of folks have managed to do it and without jailbreaking or unlocking, but you can't expect any help from PP if you have trouble. There are some folks on eBay who list instructions on how to do it and you pay them $.99 if it works, sort of an honor system thing. But those don't have an option for keeping your old phone number.
Verizon now has a $50/mo prepaid plan, which sounds pretty good, but, of course, their website won't let you change over to it if you have an existing plan with them. My contract is expired and I'm month-month now. But they don't want to make it easy to pay them less money. Still thinking it's gonna be easiest to buy unlocked AT&T phones on CL and put them on ST. Any other ideas? This is really dragging on. |
Take a serious look at beigephone.com. I transfered from Verizon and dropped my bill from $90 to a prepaid $29! They even flashed my phone and I still use Verizon towers!
