Sid, you definitely need some Fuchs for it.

Just out of curiousity, what does something like that cost?

10 grand? 20 grand?

Mid-way between the two figures, if you can settle for a turnkey 155 HP. It gets closer to the second figure the closer to 200 HP you want to get, and you almost just add them both together for a 2.9 liter 250 HP Type 1.

Pricing

Not for that engine, that is a type 1 so it likely would be less than $10K, even pro built.
The Gene Berg kit engine in my bus cost me $4500 in 1991, but Berg was the supertec of VW's in the day.

The link provided and my bugs engine are type 4, you can think of it as a small block-big block type of deal and yes a pro built on my engine with the fuel injection would be $20K
Mine is a 2600cc with JE's and nickies, there's a big chunk of change right there.

$5k would get you a real nice Type 1 engine at 120-130hp in a 1700lbs car.

Enjoy. I'll be in Phoenix in May. I want a ride.

No doubt Paul! Shoot me a message when you know the schedule and we'll grab dinner!

At least you FINALLY left the water cooled cars!

porsche4life 01-20-2014 10:58 AM

I've still got the 944 Joe! ;)

trekkor 01-20-2014 11:14 AM

I like the car!

I've had more VW's then I can remember.

Our '69 LeMons bug has a 914 2.0 motor with dual Webers.
It's quite fast and has about 120HP

If you are up for engine mods, 1776cc, Engle 110 or 120 cam with dual singles and a nice exhaust is an inexpensive build.

Does the tweeze like it? :)

I LOVE it! Haven't ridden in it yet... Traveling for business and too busy yesterday to ride in it. Everything about it screams fun. The pictures don't do the color justice. And the rack just adds to the charm. And the inside! When he opened the door and I looked at the dash and the seats, just too cool! I love the sound it makes. I love the way it makes the garage smell. I love the sound the door makes when you close it. I LOVE old cars. Running my hand over the fender makes me wonder about where the car has been and who has driven it. What stories it must have! Can't wait to ride it in the spring weather here! Best thing is how it makes Sidney grin ear to ear... Even when he is studying the wiring diagram. :) When he came home from buying it, it was like Christmas morning over here. How can you not love something that makes your man that happy?

VincentVega 01-21-2014 05:27 AM

Very cool. I've always wanted one but they dont seem to exist around here.

mikesride 01-21-2014 05:36 AM

4k!!!!!! That thing would go for about twice that or more up here!!!! Jealous of such a cool ride!!!! Awesome score!!!!

Jim Richards 01-21-2014 05:37 AM

V^2, how the heck can you fit yourself into a bug? Open sunroof? :D

Baz 01-21-2014 06:06 AM

You guys can tell she is really a car gal! Because the way it makes the garage smell? Like gas! Bad! I moved it outside until I can get new rubber for the filler neck.

Started trying to get the signals to work last night, and discovered that whoever has been monkeying with the wires was less than sharp. They used a zip tie around bare wires in place of a scotch lock! At some point the flasher had been updated and the way its wired makes no sense to me. But I swapped a new one in and it instantly let go of its magic white smoke. So I've got more chasing to do there... Ordered a whole box of goodies from CIP just now, so I can get a few other little things sorted as I have time. :D

911SauCy 01-21-2014 10:48 AM

Toss some RSR Style FUCHS and re-clock those t-bars ;)

porsche4life 01-21-2014 10:51 AM

Those would cost more than the car! ;)

But yes the front bars need work. The guy said it had been lowered a tad and thats why it rides like ****. So I've got to open it up and see what they swapped, because just reclocking them lower shouldn't have made it so freaking bouncy!

Sid - I think I might have the conversion pieces you would need. I'll take pictures next time I'm in the attic.

porsche4life 01-21-2014 10:07 PM

Thanks chad! Did you have a bug ever?

Gooch1971 01-21-2014 10:28 PM

I haven't had one yet. They came as a package deal when I bought some Fuchs several years ago. I think the previous owner had them on a bug.

GWN7 01-21-2014 10:34 PM

"Smells like gas"? Check for wet spots when your looking over the front end. If none, you might need a new gas cap seal.
