914 values

There is almost 0 activity on the 914 forum so I thought I'd try here as there have been a few 914 posts lately. I have an opportunity to buy a 72 914. The car came out of CA and looks as rust free as one can get. Carb'd. Silver, he says runs and drives, very straight, paint looks ok, interior maybe a 7. He bought it as a project. This guy is no flake, has years of Porsche ownership experience. Right now it is stored with no battery but if I were interested he'd spend the time to get a battery on it and get it running so a more thorough inspection could take place. Any ROUGH ideas on value range? I have no clue. For me it would be track car, possible vintage racer (drive to the track variety) and occasional Porsche club drive vehicle.

If it were me, and the body is straight paint acceptable, interior good, motor needs overhaul i'd be in the 1k range. If the motor runs and just needs sorting more in the 2000 range . Good running streetable car 3k and up. But a lot depends on what motor it is, what kind of carb or carbs, wheels, tires, etc.

If it's a motivated seller a deal can be had for less.

un-rusted 914 are worth a lot and going up up up as they are rare

carbs are a minus but not so much on a track car esp if webers done right

condition miles and originality all have a BIG price effect

7k to 15k if not wore-out/swapped major bits or odd mods ect

If it's the one in the Tacoma - Gig Harbor area and the owner's name is Dave, then it's a good buy though the engine needs a rebuild. Engines are not a problem really, the only real concern is rust. Wear your grubby clothes for the inspection, because you'll get dirty... make a close-up inspection of the hell-hole, and esp check the rear suspension console... anything other than surface rust in those areas would be a deal-breaker for me.

How are the door gaps when the windows are fully open? (if the windows are closed, then they support the doors and disguise any body sag) Since you plan to drive it on the road, be sure to check the electrical systems.

Thanks for the link. I'll peruse 914world.com. It's not in Tacoma and seller is in no way desperate unfortunately. If he was the car would be gone by now.
