Just Reformatted My ThinkPad w/WinXP ... Question...

Reformatted my Lenove R61i using ThinkVantage button...went smoothly, but took all day to download M/S stuff (updates, etc,)
.
It went back to the factory Win 7. I had Win 8 on it.
Which one is the better set-up?
Should I upgrade back to Win 8?
The original OS was XP...same as now after reformat.
.
TIA

It's up to you. I didn't like Win 8 much but that is mostly because I was used to the old Windows format. It seemed to me that what used to take 1-2 clicks to do something now takes 3-4. I was able to re-arrange some things (like adding Classic Shell) so I'm happier with Windows 8 but I still think Windows 7 is a great platform.

Well, sometimes when I use IE instead of Firefox the window won't open and I get a message saying so.
Like, I'll google something and select a link, and the window won't open.
I click off that link and go back to the google page and select different link and it will open.

How much 'ooommph' does it have? If it's sparse, then I'd use XP

Don Ro 02-03-2014 08:27 AM

Huh? I it IS using XP.
.
OK, I'm a puter doof.
The system is WinXP.

With a 1.5ghz chip, an older chip, and 2 gigs of ram I would stick with XP. However, keep in mind Microsoft will be abandoning xp and future security updates in April. I have to do more homework as to what kind of vulnerabilities that might open up, but its something to consider.

Don Ro 02-03-2014 08:50 AM

So what's one to do come April?...get a Mac?
Or keep using XP and load up on security programs?

id10t 02-03-2014 01:28 PM

XP expiration has been extended to mid 2015

After that Id put Linux on it

stomachmonkey 02-03-2014 01:39 PM

Yeah get a new laptop.

Put Linux on the old one.

If funds are low you can always join and keep an eye on your local Facebook trading post.

My kids laptops needed replacing, found 2 nice fairly new 17 in laptops that had end user issues.

One the HD was bad the other someone had closed the lid with an object on the keyboard which toasted the screen.

Bought both for $100, slapped a spare drive I had at home into the 1st and ordered a replacement LCD panel for $65 for the second one.

~$170 and I got $7-800 worth of PC's that I don't care too much if the kids screw them up.

And the Win 7 license stickers were still intact.:)

Personally I'd get a Mac but that's me.

Security Essentials support continues. XP still goes EOS in April.

I use a Macbook Pro with Windows 7 as my daily driver. Home has Win 7 pro, and my accounting PC has XP but no internet connection. I find that this gets me power where I need it. I'm able to share files between the Mac and PC on my wifi. Win 8 looks like a child's learning to count computer game.

Office 2013 sure seems like a downgrade, from Office 2003!

Don Ro 02-03-2014 05:12 PM

Thanks Gents!!!
.
I'll probably be looking at a Mac...since that would be the path of least brain damage for me..being a computer doofus. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/a_frusty.gifhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/a_frusty.gifhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...s/a_frusty.gif

True, but the learning curve for sharing files between a Mac and Windows is advanced class.

Don Ro 02-03-2014 05:20 PM

Bummer!
.
You smart gents would help me...right? :D
