The scammers are at it.....

Got a call yesterday from Amr saying he was calling from CRA/Canada Revenue and said that we did not file a t slip on our 2012 tax return. I said I did not disclose info re. my tax on the phone and told him to send me something in writing.

Perhaps he thought that I knew the gig was up and told me to phone Revenue Canada on the 1-800 #. I phoned up Rev. Can. and checked to see if everything was okay with our tax accounts and they said there was nothing amiss and everything was up to date on our accounts and I was not being audited.

The scammer had a number on our call display. I phoned it up. It was a Winnipeg number and said "Amr is not here right now please a message". I tried to look up the name and address on search wherebye you provide the ph. #. However it wanted to charge me on my credit card so I told myself no thanks. Will report this Amr to the police though but apparently it is a common occurrence this CRA scam....just putting it out there. Watch out.

The scam they are running around here is they call and let it ring once. If you call back, you get forwarded to a phone number in the caribbean islandesand pay $20 fee to connect, plus $9 a minute. Been getting the one ring from the same number for about a week.

I'm sure Canada it's the same but in the U.S., the IRS never contacts by phone--it's always by mail. Your response was perfect as was your follow up.

Problem is, the same scammer could go on to the next mark, and make YOUR ph# show up in their caller ID, and say, " Hi, This is Guy calling from CRA/Canada Revenue...

IOW, don't believe what your caller ID is saying --let alone what the scammer is saying.(obviously)

I got the same call Toby. Mine was from Granada. I never call back unknown numbers even though my phone doubles as work phone. I figure they will leave a message.

That is just how I look at it Brett

Report the call and the number here: https://www.lnnte-dncl.gc.ca/insnum-regnum-eng

Even if your not registered they will want to know that the person was trying to pass themselves off as a government (CRA/Canada Revenue ) agent/employee.

The government takes a dim view of people trying to screw tax money out of the public.....that's their job.

I got a call from (312) 465-1642 at 3:11AM !! It shows up as an IL USA number.
Seems a common scam is to have you press 1 and they "transfer" you to some pay per minute line that runs $20/minute or so. I almost pressed 1 while half asleep to give them a piece of mind then realized it was a scam.
