+1

We are a spec of dust in terms of size in the universe. But that should not make our existence and lives less important.

What would dwrarf us is an intelligent life form out there that is orders of magnitude more intelligent and sophisticated. It would be awesome if there was a way to find out!

Thats some fluffy pics. And yes, puts daily worries into perspective.

Quantum computing will take us to the next level. Great view, lonesome but great nonetheless.

Gee Thanks!

Now we are bound to have a new visit from Marvin!

They published a pic last year of the Sun...

...from near the orbit of Neptune...

Was about the same size as Earth in that pic.

Another level of perspective.

Was this it?? I'm not absolutely certain, but I believe this was taken(of Earth) from Voyager 2 from about around 3.5 to 4 billion miles away. Pretty cool stuff.

Cheers

Yes, that's it... the Sun from V2.

Better pack a lunch if the speed of light is the true speed limit.

They (you know....documentaries) say Hitler's broadcasts of the Olympics may have been the first radio signal robust enough to make it into interstellar space. So, 75 years of travel in the Milky Way, that is 100,000 light years in size.........

It wouldn't make any difference if it made it into intersellar space or not, the Martians and other aliens wouldn't understand German. They only speak English and with a metalic sounding accent.

sweet picture, but that youtube video from the hubble telescope is more cementing of how small earth is with respect to the universe. Im sure some of you guys have seen it. I'll try to dig it up. I really don't think my brain can really comprehend how small we are with respect to the universe.

If you make the analogy that if the universe was the size of the earth, the earth would be the size of a grain of sand or something insignificant, you are still way overestimating the earths size.

Yep, let's say someone farted, and those minute particles of etc you can smell... We are one of those particles.

I see it differently...the universe is what I can experience and Earth is but a piece of it. Its a scale on a great dragon flying through a dangerous and beautiful sky but I'm part of it all...and it of me...

How do we know that is really a picture of Earth? Just me being a skeptic.

Yes, this picture was obviously faked on a Hollywood sound stage.

I share a similar view. We are significant because the most complex thing that we know of in our universe is the 4 inches between our ears.

Jim Richards 02-11-2014 10:28 AM

We're all supernova remnants. Lint of the cosmos.

aschen 02-11-2014 12:12 PM

in one model of the universe, the shortest distance between two points is a line, in the opposite direction

sammyg2 02-11-2014 03:19 PM

Earth is a long way from Mars?
Whooda thunk.
