The Invention Secrecy Act of 1951 (Pub.L. 82–256, 66 Stat. 3, enacted February 1, 1952, codified at 35 U.S.C. §§ 181–188) is a body of United States federal law designed to prevent disclosure of new inventions and technologies that, in the opinion of selected federal agencies, present a possible threat to the national security of the United States.

The U.S. government has long sought to control the release of new technologies that might threaten the national defense and economic stability of the country.

Each year around this time, the biggest names in tech converge on Las Vegas at the annual International CES Show (Jan. 6-10), which organizers tout as a stage where break-through consumer electronics innovations are introduced to the marketplace. Wearable technology, tablet computers, and all the latest gadgets for the home, office, and gym will be on display. CES's spotlights, however, won't be shinning on some of the most technologically advanced concepts to come out of the minds of innovators this past year. That's because those ideas pose a national security threat, and the government doesn't want the wrong people learning about them.
I was watching the TV show called "Leverage" and they spoke of this act. Had some fun theorizing that time machines and stuff were being kept from the public.

In real life just after WWII a US Navy veteran flew the first hovercraft over a lake, the government liked it so much they kept it a secret for 40 years, in fact 30 years after the Brits were awarded a patent. They only touted out the fact when caught trying to cheat the BHC out of skirt royalties.
