Craft Beer Map

Craft Beer article and interactive map:

Idea of the Week: Mapping the Rise of Craft Beer : The New Yorker

A New Yorker Interactive

Just wish they had more detailed views of each state. On the other hand, what a road trip!!!

Map is wrong. There is simply no way CA has more breweries than OR.

Take a look at the number of breweries per 500k, Oregon has California beat by almost 5:1 and ranks number 2 in the country (Vermont is number 1). That's may be why it feels that there are more in Oregon!

There's something like 10 breweries alone within a 3 block radius of my house.

Hopworks Urban Brewery – Organic BeerHome | Hopworks Urban Brewery - Organic Beer

This place is great. Always nice to stop in for a beer after work..

Vermont is a mecca for authentic, fine drink and food.

Hill Farmstead
Alchemist
Lawson's
Rock Art
Switchback
Shed
Otter Creek
Long Trail
Etc...

Well worth a pilgrimage and tour if you're a craft brew fan.

Saw this poster a few weeks ago, pretty cool:

I live in Fort Collins, which is pretty much the Napa Valley of beer. It's a great place to be for a beer guy!

New Zealand is full of them. Probably the most revolting beers I've come across ever. Each beer maker puts more and more and more into the beers making them undrinkable. Someone did a special thanks and gave the GF and I a mixed two dozen craft beers as a Christmas gift. I've tasted a few then poured them down the sink. GF likes one or two. I tend to drink something like a Beeks or Corona.

I think Seattle could have its own map showing craft breweries by neighborhood. We now have 8 within 2 miles of where I live.

LOL. Good call. I just like a good watery beer that you can drink lots of and doesn't taste tooo much of hops or tooo much of yeast. OK, Corona was a bad example.

Lagers are generally less flavorful and seldom change without being declared as faulted. I, too, enjoy a light flavored lager depending on the matched meal or occasion. An IPA with citrus, hops and little malt can pair extremely well with finer foods such as smoked meats... the flavors complement each other and you taste more complexity with entire the meal. A lager in the same situation would be completely overpowered by the flavors of the meal to the point it seems you can taste nothing... just like water. Are you drinking to get just drunk or are you enjoying drink for flavor?

Ales on the other hand are a whole world of flavors to explore. If you're measuring ales against a lifetime of tasting lagers and expecting them to match in order to meet your standard then you should consider learning to describe ale flavors. A reputable craft brew tour and guide can help you get your bearings and learn flavors- there is crap out there and you probably should pour those out (I'm an ale fan and I've poured plenty out myself). With the popularity of the craft movement there are many craft beers available through retail that are terrible by all measures... and they still will sell despite their poor quality because there are so many people that want to try it themselves. Those brewers will think themselves a success until sales dry up as the marketplace determines they suck after tasting. You may have stumbled across such rubbish in your gift pack... don't let that dissuade you from trying more. There are excellentcraft beers that have taken the beer world by storm.

While we have some breweries in NJ (mainly brew pubs), the state recently changed the laws to promote more. Hopefully, we can look forward to some new ones...
