Vintage Vinyl

Hi,
I was watching this stupid, staged show called caught red handed, and they showed people stealing vinyl records worth $3-400. I have some of those records they showed and even rarer ones in mint shape.
If i can get close to that kind of money for sone of my vinyl, i will be a happy man (for p-car parts of course). My question is where do i research these records? We don't have anymore collector or vintage vinyl shops in town any more, so looking for best approach to research and sell.

Thanks in advance,
Bob James

I use this a lot, basically searches completed eBay auctions.

Different pressings of the same album can be worth more than others. Something to keep in mind especially on the higher end stuff. Where one version could be worth $500 and the other is for the dollar bin.

Yup. The plates used to make a record only last so long. Different sets of plates can have a different sound depending on the skill of the guy making them. Marks on the inner ring indicate the pressing and who made the plates.

Its an obscure area of music to most, but I happen to know about Detroit techno music. I've picked records up for $3 at resale shops, and sold them to people in Germany/Netherlands for $150

Don't get your hopes up. I've spent my life in used record shops and collect. Unless you've got mint original blue note jazz vinyl or extremely rare 78 blues records, there's not many records that sell for more than $100 a piece.

Yeah I just checked to see if my mint never opened never played Def Leppard Hysteria picture disc was appreciating to any extent and there's a bunch of 'em out there and most are selling for around $20-35.00. I doubt if I have anything else as special but one man's trash is another man's treasure so you never know.

I collect vinyl and prices really depend on what pressing it is and what condition it is in.

The highest prices are for first pressing MINT condition records. By mint I mean basically unplayed. No marks at all, glossy vinyl and the jacket must be in new shape without any creases or marks. A few excellent condition records would grade out as near mint (NM), most of the records that people have really taken care of would be considered in EX condition or maybe EX+.

Anyhow, if you want to PM me I'll be happy to research some of what you have and give you an idea.

A good place to start is the Goldmine book which is the standard for collectible vinyl. A rule of thumb is that most records from the 60s and 70s in good playing condition run between $5 and $20 per record depending on artist. Some iconic bands like the Beatles go for higher, I have a nice copy of Meet the Beatles that is a 2nd pressing that is probably worth about $80-100. I bought it for $10 at a garage sale.

I'd like to add that there are a LOT of metal, punk and hardcore records going for way more than $100.

I agree. I collect punk records and first pressings of records that weren't pressed in high numbers are very collectible. Same with metal, I know. All genres have their holy grails

A few years back I paid $150 for a mint copy of the Rolling Stones Her Satanic Majesties Request. Not because I particularly liked the album but because I owned the original, I loved the cover and my rotten stepbrother sold it for a pack of cigarettes.

I paid similar money for a mint Jamming with Edward and a mint Tracey Nelson/Mother Earth Living with the Animals too.

As a collector hobby goes vinyl is still relatively cheap but based on those website prices I still got ripped.
