Reloading as a Chronic Illness...

I guess there are worse afflictions. That, and it only starts to look really bad when I line up all the calibers for which I reload, with several variations of some of them to boot. Here are one each of the current inventory:

I know several of you have the same affliction. There really is no cure. Show us what you have...

For some stuff you cant shoot if you dont reload

All my stuff is either rimfire, common, or has milsurp available. Id like to reload some but the calibers Id do it for I dont shoot enough to make the initial investment or space investment worthwhile

lane912 02-15-2014 01:33 PM

yes it is quite fun, we are building explosive driven devices....
then you get to test them-
and make them better-

you just can't buy bullets that are as accurate as the ones I build for my rifle-

this.

i haven't purchased factory ammunition for my .308 since the first 80 rounds fired through it. my reloads are wicked accurate in my rifle.

.223, same as above.

i just can't bring myself to reload for shotgun. ammunition is relatively cheap and i just don't feel like i shoot it enough to make it worthwhile.

Yup, every lead bullet in that photo is cast by yours truly. I use wheel weights for the handgun stuff and hunting loads for the .45-70, and 20:1 lead/tin for the match loads in .45-70 and .45-2.6.

Bullet casting is an entire hobby unto itself - I really enjoy it. Just throw a stack of CD's into the CD changer, turn on the tunes, make myself comfortable, and have at it. The resultant bullets are superior to anything we can buy for their intended applications. Plus, they are essentially free. Can't beat that.

I also have the reloading addiction/affliction...

Jeff you really need to sand and re-stain that railing. Yeesh. Just sayin....

And I have a pellet gun to keep the deer out of the yard. BEWARE!

Jeff Higgins 02-15-2014 04:48 PM

I've never gotten into a progressive press; I've been using the same old RCBS single stage press that I bought as a teenager in one of their starter kits for darn near 40 years. It's never been about production volume for me. That, and my bullet lubes of choice are so soft (and some are quite sticky as well) that they would come off the bullets and gum up the whole works. Even in my match shooting days, with the demand for ammunition that required, saw me loading on the single stage. I just find it very relaxing - kind of an escape if you will. As such, I'm never in a hurry to see how much I can crank out.

And just when would I find time to do that, with all the reloading I'm doing? :D

You'll put your eye out...

RSBob 02-15-2014 05:03 PM

You know Mr. Higgins, when 'hobbies' get in the way of basic home maintenance... Well, you really need to buy a sports car to know what I mean.

And yes, I was wondering about that lack of sight in my right eye. Won't keep looking down that dark cylinder thing in the future.

I didn't want to become obsessive about reloading  but I went to buy some Hornady .223 40 grain V-max Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Ammunition :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: 223 Rem :: 223 Rem 40 gr V-MAX™ ammo and they said NO. It's still unavailable because of the American ammo shortage.

So I may have to start reloading for the .223 because I just can't buy what I want. The annoying thing is I hardly ever shoot this gun.

id10t 02-17-2014 10:57 AM

Bill - found the 55gr v-max - Bullets.com

grafs.com also has it (for a little cheaper). both places are cheap on shipping

Bill Douglas 02-17-2014 11:10 AM

Thanks, but I live out in the colonies and importing is a PITA in regard to gun stuff. I can walk in and buy it off the shelves but not import it without a license - but thanks.

I bought some Black Hills 52 GR Match, which I believe is good stuff, but I really wanted to try out the light 40 GR stuff through my gun that has a 1 in 12 twist barrel..

Jeff Higgins 02-17-2014 07:23 PM

Bill, I load 40 grain Hornady V-Maxes in my .223. It's a Remington 700 with a 14" twist barrel. They shoot great, and I think within the range and velocity limitations of the .223, they are a very good bullet. Incidentally, I also shoot the 60 grain V-Max or 60 grain Sierra in the same rifle with good results. You should have no trouble with the 12" twist and 52-60 grain bullets, if you wind up stuck with them for the time being.

Primers, brass, and component bullets are once again more or less available here. Powder is lagging behind, though. I don't pay any attention to the availability of loaded ammo (since I don't buy any), but my shooting buddies who do say it's not bad as far as availability again. It might be awhile before it trickles down to your corner of the world, though.

Bill Douglas 02-17-2014 07:36 PM

Thanks Jeff. I load a lot of .45ACP, a little bit of 9mm and some .38 Special but I didn't really want to start doing .223 stuff as I hardly ever shoot it. But a month or two ago I was at a 200 yard range and my .17HMR was way outshooting the .223, plus my buddy's AR15 was outshooting the Sako .223 so I thought I'd try to find an ammo it liked. Someone had said the slow twist 1:12 of the Sako really likes the very light projectiles, whereas I'd been using 55GR stuff.

We seem to have all the reloading stuff you could ever want here, but loaded ammo is going to/staying in the US being a bigger market than lil' ole us.
