Mutant-sized Costco rotisserie chickens

Have you guys seen how big those chickens are? They're not all fat either. Meatiest, juiciest chickens I've ever had. Kind of unnatural so I stopped buying them. The hormones Costco or its supplier is feeding those birds can't be good for us.

I think they are Froster Farms.
Yeah I wonder the same thing and fruit and vegetables look kind of robust as well.
Compared to the organic grown foods .

Federal law prohibits use of steroids or hormones in poultry production, so Costco chicken does not have them. The carcass is likely injected with a saline solution to increase moisture and flavor, but that is typical of most chicken prepared by large processors.

They are brined.

We make a Costco run once a month.

Always get one.

We like them.

Best deal they have in that place.

I buy one every 6 months or so just to see if they have changed. The have not. It is the one and only thing I have complained to Costco about.

Around here apparently the chickens don't get any exercise, they are full of fat.

Have you seen their cooked shrimp? They are big and tasty - and each exactly the same. Cloned?

My parent's were born in 1926 and grew up in the South. They never had a turkey at Thanksgiving. In both of their hometowns in TX and LA they ate capons for Thanksgiving - which I think were castrated chickens. They were VERY large!

Costco chickens are fantastic. We get them all the time.

Only way to be totally sure of the quality of your food is to produce it yourself.
I say just live.

I always thought that smaller and younger chickens were supposed to be more tender, and larger older birds were tougher? Maybe that's why they're brined, and maybe that's why they are sold at Costco?

Same with shrimp. The larger ones tend to be tougher and less flavorful.

Here's a very interesting primer on shrimp: cold water shrimp vs. warm water shrimp. I like this chef, Nick Stellino, because he explains the balance of food ingredients in cooking. He also explains why traditional recipies are the way they are.
