The Tubby Tele(caster) Thread.

A thread for Tough Teles.

This one is 52 Blackguard spec, all vintage hardware (except for 4 way switching, reverse wound pups and flipped control plate.) One piece alder body. Nitro and gun oiled finished. Huge neck. Hand wound Brierley pickup set.

The harder it gets used, the better this POS gets.

Mine will have a Parsons B-bender.

It will also take just a bit longer than 5 minutes. I'll have to source the wood, carve the neck....

Here's one I've been building.. a real heavy chunk of ash.

Havent decided what to do for a neck yet. I like the idea of an ebony fretboard.

Did you cut and route the body?

It was a really rough rejected body. Heavy as hell.

The story I got was that he was a lumber supplier to Fender, and they sent him back a bunch of blanks and such. So, it may actually be a Fender, who knows? He had stacks of junk. I gave him $10. I bought a Jazzmaster blank too. That one came out nice.

The next one I do is gonna be ground up. Finally got a decent workshop with a table saw, router setup, etc..

Your work was certainly an inspiration..

Great job on both!

Go! Go! Go! Starting with a pile of wood and ending up with a fine instrument, really gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Thank you, I appreciate that!

I feel like I wondered back into tdpri.com! Stuart, how do you get that wear between the ashtray and the controls. How on earth do you play? Does your hand bleed?

Fingernails. A lot of the old ones with the really thin finishes wear like that.

I would really like to do a Mahogany bodied Tele one day, with Ebony fret board like NC is doing. I would make it an HSS with a Floyd Rose and then do it up in black and white as a David Gilmour type tribute guitar. I know, I know... David's famous black guitar is a Strat, but I like Tele's...

BTW, Stuart, what's up with the wear under the bridge and knobs of your guitar? How did you achieve that type of wear? I wouldn't think that would be from a pick?

LOL. Its just pinky wear, lot of buckle rash on the back too. The thing was shot with very thin nitro, then steel wooled to a matt finish. It has no top coat. The paint held up pretty well for the first 5 years or so- but its wearing more severely now.

Since it would be a "Fender", if I didn't like it for any reason, I could just build another body - which would be very cheap, slap on all the parts from the B-bender body - interchangeable.

One guitar is true. But I like that sound. I put the push-pull pot in my LP to simulate his #1 and getting the pups out of phase. One of my guitar projects is to build a Tele with the B-bender. And since the Fender's are so cheap to make (in comparison to a Les Paul), I can always make another body or a whole Tele.
