cheap load cell for measuring weight?

say someone wants to measure a weight. a tension really.

this is for a compound bow..archery stuff.. how much is the bow pulling at various cycles of the draw.

my bow is supposed to hit somewhere from 71-73 lbs in about 7" of the draw cycle. i think a boat hand winch..a load cell, a clip to the bow...crank it slowly and measure the various weights.

i want to build this thing..cheap. any ideas.?

like this!

this looks like it..

no? seriously confusing. i hear "wheatstone bridge" and i have college flashbacks of hoping and praying for a "C" grade

bonus points if someone can show me how to break open a bathroom scale and used the digital readout..hah.

How much resolution do you want? You could setup a fixture for the bow with a pulley that has a string on it with one end attached to the nock or whatever the place is that you pull the bowstring. At the other end of the puley string you have a hook or some other method of attaching a weight. Then you can use some nice calibrated weights and measure the displacement of the bowstring with calipers or a micrometer or a ruler or whatever.

But if you want more data points, or if the force you exert goes down as you pull it like going over center then that method won't work.

What about a digital fish scale? Or do you want something you can log data in Excel?

Just a regular fish / game scale will suffice, I'd imagine.

I thought a spring based scale may be less, but that digital above will do what you need up to 120 lbs. Not shooting an old English long bow, you should be fine with that range. :D

Guess I wanted to graph a draw weight curve.
