Unless this potential home buyer is demanding a solution to their problem prior to purchase, it is their problem not yours.

If you wish to avoid this same conflict in the future just remove all your stuff and move out, it's easier to sell a house that way anyway - proven fact, and for just these types of reasons.

The house isn't officially on the market. We're half heartedly looking. If we found a house we liked at a good price moving is an option. The couple who looked at our house was brought in by the realtor who sold it to us.

The way the rest of the room is set up, that has to be the TV wall. Hard for me to imagine it as a blank slate. Might not be major construction for some, but when I look at it floor to ceiling, it sure seems that way.

Obviously the chimney runs behind the giant mirror. Seems like the easy answer it to make it like gassy's photochop pic (excellent work, by the way :D), but with the TV located where the fireplace is, with an alcove for center speaker. I could see removing the middle shelf of the alcoves just outboard of the current fireplace to accomodate decent sized speakers.

Here's the whole thing... Mirror art was there when we moved in. We've gone back and forth about taking it down. It's grown on me over the years.

Ok Foxpaws. You're hired. When do we start the demo??? :D

Smile - I am more of a big picture sort of girl...

Hopefully the beam that goes across the top of the fireplace area and the lower bookshelves is strong-you could use that for your TV mount...

Those skinny fireplace inserts are sort of neat, they can go from more traditional (like the one I used) or something really modern like this....

Mount the TV just above the fireplace and get rid of the mirror. Put a pair of doors on both side fo the fireplace and call it the day. I have never been a big fan of TVs above or near fire place unless its a family room. Ideally, tv should be around 42" center from the finish floor for comfortable viewing. Who the heck started to put flat screens above fireplaces??? My Real estate agents tells me to put a plug and Cable above the fire place. People always want to put a TV there. I refuse and haven't done it yet. Sorry if this pisses off anyone.

If you like those, we built those long and skinny fire places around decks. They sometimes run along the entire length of a deck or some type of outdoor structures.

That's still an idea we're kicking around for when we eventually get around to completely reworking our back yard.

Remove the TV, remove the perception of a problem. Replace with picture of dogs paying pool.

Not to be mean but that entire wall is a disaster. Agree with those who say tear the entire thing out, put a big ass tv in there and enjoy it.

I think that mirror would scare people away from a yard sale, not to mention a home for sale!

LOL, tell us how you really feel.

Can't say I disagree.

Disaster? Lots of disasters in my neighborhood then. Walls like this are fairly common in southwestern architecture. Generally considered an upgrade in new construction.

I have friends who have a similar size wall in their house that's just flat. It works out great for the TV, but it's very large area for just hanging a TV and a couple of pictures.

The mirror is definitely a matter of taste... and we ain't got none! :D

The vast majority of people who see it have a positive reaction. It was here when we moved in. My wife and I have discussed removing the art part and the entire mirror. So far, that's all we've done... discuss it.

If you have a traditional fireplace, hearth, and mantle, it's really your only choice. Most rooms have the fireplace as the centerpiece, so putting the tv on one side makes the room feel asymmetrical. We have a full sized gas insert that's 2' above the floor due to the stone hearth, 4' of stone on either side, a mantle above, and book cases on either side. That's the wall, putting the tv above is really the only choice. We get lots of compliments, so it must not be all bad.

Jim, I know of a perfect place for it. it will block out a little bit of the park (maybe a good thing?) but low enough without obscuring the great view. That's something you can do after you come out here. I can show you how to build it. Propane of hook it up to natural gas. I will try to get you a pic of the one in my place when I have a chance.

I know Matt. My TV is in the living room but no fireplace in the house. My wife would have try and put it there if we had a fireplace. To me, a TV should be in the Family Room, but not everyone has that choice. I know we don't. When friends come over, they always turn on the TV. I want to talk and find out what they are doing instead of this distraction. I made a cabinet for the TV with doors so it can be hidden out of sight. I am just a little strange that way.

I find the tv over the fireplace makes my neck sore after a while. YMMV
